Crackers. Why?

?

Dunno.

When you think about it, aren't christmas crackers a really weird idea. Where on earth did that come from?

And what a complete waste of money.

As an adult I see your point but I remember being super excited by them as a kid. They were the highlight of Christmas and birthdays so maybe it is a kiddie thing. You know like those machines that you feed money into and a bit of plastic tat comes out. Kids love them too.

An explanation here

Fucked if I know why people spend twenty quid on silly paper hats and tat. But then I don't understand a lot of things these days

wrinklytum · 12/12/2008 22:47

Oh,loud bang,crappy joke,paper crown,tat hidden treasure.....what more could a small child want

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 12/12/2008 22:48

Thank you WMMC, interesting to know it's peculiarly british.

So why are there so many "grown up" crackers. £20 for a box containing a set of small screwdrivers? Or perhaps a silver notebook to keep contact details?

And why the bloody hell do you have to wear a paper hat???

though I do like the jokes

I thought it was to stop people smoking at the table - they go up in a puff of smoke if they do while wearing the hat!

Now that's what I call christmas entertainment!

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 12/12/2008 22:50

Now that could be a talking point for Christmas day

Why not!

The jokes are fantastically bad, I love them. My dd is planning to make her own crackers this year.

Wish me luck

noiamnot · 12/12/2008 22:53

I bought the very first ones I ever have for the boys this year.

starbear · 12/12/2008 22:54

I've had a set of crackers in a box for 12 years. I've never got them out as I've (now we) only had adults for dinner. 12 years ago I changed my mind about putting them on the table and they've stayed in the box since. I've never had the heart to throw them out. This year DS is 4 and my god daughter is 2. So they will come out this year. BUT will the bang still work after all these years???
I'm not wearing a paper hat, errm unless very very drunk
