How can I get DP a ring as a surprise?

Dp lost the ring I got for him years ago, while we were on holiday and I thought of buying him one for christmas. Wanted it to be a surprise though but how does one get a ring without measurement? Do they come in small medium and large? Can you get them altered or if I bought could it be exchanged afterwards?
Can you buy online, a plain gold band, not too wedding ringy but more craft. Got the original one at Greenwich market-not easy to get to now.

yes, you can get it altered if it doesn't fit.

If he is a sound sleeper, you can tie a piece of string around his finger when he's asleep then take that to a jeweller who should be able to measure it for you and tell you his ring size.

no. They all come in different sizes so you need to know what size his finger is. If he has one he wears at the moment then you can take this or get one for him that can be resized after christmas. I worked in a jewellers, one lady brought in a piece of string (it didn't work by the way) which was supposto be the same size, however it stretched so could have been 6 sizes out. I asked her if she wanted to bring him in, she couldn't as he was in prison. Oh well!

they come in sizes H I J etc. could you find a way of tying a piece of string round his finger to get a measurement, make up some reason?

You can buy rings online, a friend of mine comissioned a beautiful silver ring for her boyfriend last christmas it had wood inlay and was very unusual and looked amazing.

You can get rings altered, especially if you have one specially made, but check with the retailer first.

Light sleeper- I did think of that but he would wake up. He wakes up when I remove the book he is under and mumbles "I'm reading that"

A plane ring can be really easily resized. Ones with diamonds/stones around them can't as the settings move. Solitairs can be altered though. It's better to get one that is too big, they stretch ones that are too small and it weakens the gold.

What's your budget and what are you looking for?

CountessDracula · 02/12/2008 23:16

Could you get him to try on one of your rings?
Dh got me an eternity ring this year and got my mum to ask to try on one of mine somehow so she could say how big it was.

A bit harder if he doesn't wear one now though

cut his finger off

Sorry only joking please DO NOT cut his finger off but it was the first thing that came to mind.

DPs engagment ring had to be resized and it looks really naff now.

Get him to stick his hand in some kinda clay stuff.

Thanks for all suggestions. I am still going to think about it but may wait and just go out with him one day and get one together. It's too difficult otherwise. If I saw a nice one that looked right I might get it and take a chance-not online though. Not many craft jewellers round here I can think of.
Thanks all.
