My dd age 6 needs a 1940s war time outfit for the Christmas play where she's going to be an adult civilian. What on earth can I put together without spending loads? I can sew but time is short so any ideas gratefully received!

I have a dress you can borrow if you like. It is a blue apron dress with red trim. It was made by a friend's mum using a 1940s dress pattern. DD and her friend wore the dress in September for the school 1940s day. They had big red ribbons in a half side pony tail to match.

I think there is a picture of her in the dress on my profile. I will go check and if not I can try and link to one.

Here - I hope; it is on profile. It is one piece of material. Goes over head like an apron would. Then fastens underneath at front and then with a sash at the back. The dress is blue witht he trim as seem. The pocket ont he front in a red apple shape.

My DD is age 6 and it fits.

Failing that I have the pattern here too.

For ww2 day (dd was in Y6) I bought some vile cheap curtain fabric and made a gathered skirt with sash. Found a very cheap school type blouse (Matalan?). Curled her hair and she had combs in each side. Pity she had to visit the osteopath dressed like that!

A gas mask box will go a long way to creating the right impression - small brown box on a string to go over her shoulder. She wants a really old fashioned Margaret Thatcher/The Queen style handbag as well.

We curled DD's hair using rags.
