Always do stockings for my parents and DH.They contain

Satsuma
Nuts (except DH who gets Haribo as he's allergic)
Some kind of Kitchen utensil
Some kind of household freebie (last year got some dishwasher tablets ahnded out beforew a concert. It's a standing joke bewteen my Dad and I)
Fancy pants/knickers
Socks
Miniture
Magazine
Chocs
Handful of shiny coppers (as in the money, not the police)
Packet of tissues
Hankies
Toiletries
Small Honey/marmelade (usually pinched from a hotel brekfast in the months beforehand)
Bookmark

It takes some thinking about and I start planning in June/July. My mum has always put thought into our stockings so we give the same back. In fact I enjoy it more than shopping for the bigger presents, as the stocking contents are a complete surprise. Also have a seperate box so all those "offcuts" of wrapping paper from the bigger pressies, can be saved and used to wrap the stocking ones.

Pointy you have inspired me to start a shiny new thread on a new name i agree bluebell is rubbish.

There are certain things I always put in:

a book (Mr men/little miss quite good size wise)
pants (multipack split and used to stuff spaces)
choc coins
stickers

Other things over the years (bearing in mind I have a girl and a boy) are:
bubble bath
lip gloss
keyring
whoopee cushion
necklace
toy car
rings
knight and horse
cup
fancy straw
christmassy lolly
tights
gel pens
notepad
bobbles/clips
stamp and ink pad
book marks
bouncy balls
marbles

Plus probably tons of things that I can't think of.

So far they have a mr man/little miss key ring each.

When I was a child during the 1960's, my mum used to fill one of her old nylon stockings for me!!!!! Sadly, with the arrival of nylon tights, I didn't get two legs worth of pressies!

bellavita · 04/10/2008 09:18

I have two DS's (11 & 9), I would usually put in something along the lines of

socks
undies
new pencils/feltips and some sort of colouring thing/activity book
selection box
a small game - last year it was 20Q
top trumps

I hang the bag on the inside of their bedroom door. The boys will get up, get their bags and go into my mum and dad they usually go through the contents sat on my mum and dads bed.

I love these threads!

We never had stockings as kids either and one year I decided we should so on Xmas Eve I got 3 of my Dad's socks and hung them over the fireplace to my parent's total panic! I think we just got an orange and some money in them!

My Dad makes up for it now with the grandchildren though - he has a stocking for each of them and FC leaves things for them all.

In our house the stockings and toys under the tree are from FC. Presents from anyone else are from them. DS gets a present from us too.

Have NO ideas for this year as yet though.

bellavita · 04/10/2008 09:27

The stockings are from us and the things on their christmas list are from FC.

Soapbox · 04/10/2008 09:36

The core 'must haves' are book, CD, DVD.

Then for DS, some packs of whatever the latest phase is for collecting things (so go gos this year)! Then a few sweeties and some hawkins bazaar type things. New gloves. A few sweeties.

For DD, a few smellies from lush (which of course stink the house out)! Maybe some nail varnish. A small claire's accessories voucher. Sweeties.

NorbertDentressangle · 04/10/2008 09:49

In our house only the children get stockings, not the adults, and Father Christmas only brings the stocking presents not the under the tree ones.

The stockings have stuff like:

-art and crafts stuff
-Foamy Soap in a can and novelty bath sponge
-Play Mobile/Polly Pocket figure
-socks/pants
-choc coins/Xmas choc lollies
-hair accessories
-silly toy like those squishy/gungey balls, whoopee cushion, fart putty
-books
-gel pens/colouring pencils
-mosaic-type colouring book
-slinky spring
-DD usually has a quartz/crystal type thing (you know, the rough piece, not polished)last year it was a chunk of amethyst
-some sort of glittery/girlie storage pot for DD
-a couple of Matchbox cars for DS

I have to say that the 99p fart putty has consistently been the most popular stocking filler for the past 3 years!

Torch
Plastic Necklace or Hairbands
Pair pyjamas
Note pad & pen
Chocolate coins
Satsuma
Small wooden puzzle

laweaselmys · 04/10/2008 19:20

Stockings = seasonal food and one small toy (preferably a puzzle type thing) in our house. This started because we have the rule that you can't open presents until everybody is up. If you don't wanna get woken up repeatedly from 4am onwards with begging requests for present opening time now, they can have the food and a little something to keep them distracted while they watch cartoons and you can sleep in a bit later!

Do the same for adults. Although toy more likely to be a tricky puzzle or desk toy.
