Elf Etiquette

We don't normally "do" the elf but this year somehow have ended up moving it about, hiding, the occasional note. Usually I just leave it on the shelf.

My daughter wrote a card for the elf and it was next to it but hubby didn't realise. She isn't upset just mentioned she wondered why the elf hasn't opened the card.

Any ideas of how to explain or what we can say was the elf's excuse tomorrow? I don't think it's a big deal but equally feel a bit bad we didn't open it.

How old is your DD?

The decision you need to make is how much you want to get into this. The elf is an ongoing fabrication and some parents just don't want to get into all that. Others do.

So you could say 'the elf is a fun game we play and I hadn't noticed' or you can make something up to pretend the elf is real. It's a philosophical decision!

6 going on 7 so I thought she would twig it was us the first time we did it but she believed it was magic so we ended up playing along. All these years I've been happy we didn't start it 🙈

I agree with you, need to decide what to do. Leaning towards saying it is a fun game we have been doing 😬

The elf either can't read or couldn't find his glasses.

Either make him some glasses out of pipe cleaners tomorrow or pick the most intelligent stuffed toy (preferably an owl) and set it up reading the note to the elf. Or just tell the 7yo you forgot

Love the idea of a most intelligent soft toy 😂

Pipe cleaners/glasses is a good one thanks.

If you're honest that it's a fun game you've been doing, it can actually get more adventurous and playful, and she's in the loop so she can take an active part in the whole game.
