Help! Thoughts on mobile phone gaming controller?

DS 16 seems to enjoy playing on his phone with friends more than Xbox

I had zero idea about this sort of thing!

Those in the know… thoughts on something like this?

What sort of games is he playing on his phone? Is it something with on screen joysticks? If yes the backbone is quite good. Think stuff like Minecraft.

If he's playing games where you mostly just tap to control things then it makes playing them more awkward. Games like candy crush or merge games.

I’m not really sure
definitely not driving games

I have heard him mention brawlers?

We have a couple of 8bitdo Pro 2 controllers which connects via bluetooth to our ipad and can also be used on the Xbox and Switch too. They are very good.

If you meant brawl stars then yes that's the type of game that benefits from that controller.

Anything where you see one or two circles on screen then you place your thumbs on and slide them around to control the game is using a virtual joystick and a real controller will feel better to play with.

If you are not sure have a peak over his shoulder next time he plays. If he has the phone sideways and a thumb on each side of the screen he'll love it. If he's holding it upright with one hand and just tapping every now and then then it won't do as much - but he may still like it anyway.

Is there a reason he's playing on phone over his Xbox btw? Is it that mobile just has the games he wants or is it that he doesn't want to be tied to a screen? There are some cool handheld consoles too if it's the latter.

Oh wow thanks

as to why…. He’s lazy!! And Xbox requires turning on more things 😆!

and i can’t see if it will fit an iPhone 13 mini . If you can spare a minute please could you check? When I Google… it says yes but on the product description it doesn’t mention.

I am sorry to ask and no pressure. Please feel free to ignore!!

I found a discussion on Reddit about people saying they have one with an iPhone 13 mini so it should work fine.

You need to check if the phone has a lightning connector or a USB connector and make sure that you buy the matching backbone. You can buy them directly on the backbone website if you are not sure which version you'd be getting at Argos.

Floorclean · 14/12/2025 15:22

Oh thank you

it’s like another language to me

@DoAWheelie just realised his phone has lightening port and not usb-c

what does that mean in terms of the Xbox controller I linked to?

You can buy it from their website directly - just make sure you click lightning not usb c

Argos seem to only stock USB C

Beware that all new iPhones use USB C now so if you plan on upgrading his phone soon then it will stop working.
