Book recommendations for 13yo DS

Looking for book recommendations for my DS13 please. He loves a graphic novel but also looking to get some chapter books too. Ideally without a big focus on romantic relationships as he is not impressed when books focus on that! Previously enjoyed the Loki series, Adrian Mole, the Sapiens books, and the Once series. He has asked for a history book too.

Any recommendations are greatly appreciated!

Anything by Tom Palmer who writes great fiction based on real WW2 events-try Angel of Grasmere.Or Phil Earle “When the Sky Falls” also WW2.
“something I said” by Ben Bailey Smith is good
Have a look at Toppsta website for age recommendations

The Robert Muchamore “Cherub” series seems to be like crack cocaine in book form for this age

If he has previously read the Loki series and likes mythology then he might enjoy the Rick Riordan books such as the Percy Jackson series or Nico de Angelo.

The percy Jackson series by rick riordan is very good. My son loved it. Dragonball books are also very good

If he likes dystopian worlds then the Hunger Games, Maze Runner and Divergent series are all great.

Mine read Percy Jackson at primary school so might be a bit young for a teen.

My DS has just enjoyed reading the book Dry by Neal and Jarrod Shusterman.

My 12 year old DS has just finished reading Sawbones by Catherine Johnson, which combines history within a crime novel. He really enjoyed it because of the historical aspect, so I've bought him the follow-up book, Blade and Bone, for Christmas.

Great suggestions thank you. He’s read Percy Jackson and did really enjoy them. We recently went to see Hunger Games the play and he likes the films too so that’s a great suggestion.
Hadn’t heard of the others but they all look right up his street.

DC or Marvel comic books perhaps.

InfiniteTeas · 07/12/2025 08:53

My 13 year old's love of reading really got going with the Ranger's Apprentice series which is huge, so kept him going for ages.
He also loved Garth Nix's Sabriel, Lirael snd Abhorsen - less keen on the follow-ups and I'm with him on that!
The Hunger Games series.
Impossible Creatures by Katherine Rundell
Brandon Sanderson's younger books.
The Mortal Engines series.
Patrick Ness's trilogy.
His 15 year old reluctant reader brother liked the Cherub series.

Skullduggery Pleasant by Derek Lady - there are loads in the series and my 13 Yr old loves them.

I was coming on to say the Cherub series too.

Following this with interest. So what would people recommend if they have read Cherub and Skullduggery.?

MyUmberOrca · 07/12/2025 20:13

I've recently had the book Holes by Louis Sachar recommended to me for my son who is a similar age to yours and has similar tastes.

The Summoner series has been a big hit here too.
