I know elf on the shelf is divisive and many feel strongly against doing this, but my son absolutely loves it. The problem is I thoroughly lack imagination, and he can't read and a lot of the pranks I have found online usually have some written pun type jokes to go with them.

So I am asking for the collective help of those who do enjoy doing elf on the shelf what sort of pranks, or scenes do you like to set up in your house?

Also this year, by a series of unfortunate events we have ended up with 5 elves. I am hoping on some days to incorporate all of them.

I saw this on FB and copied it this morning. I taped him on the back of my dressing gown. We spent a long time looking for him before they noticed and both laughed their heads off.

OMG I love this!

I try to stick to simple things nowadays. Had one for about 12 years and have done some rather elaborate things over the years like dressing it up as Harry Potter and creating a broomstick for it to hang from the ceiling. I just can’t deal with things like that anymore, it takes far too long.

Youngest DC seem happy enough with the simple things. So far it’s covered the tree in toilet paper, hung from the ceiling light, been trapped in the letterbox, sat on DS’s bed with his teddies and been headfirst in a cereal box. I’ll do the snow angels with flour and googly eyes on fruit- I do this every year. One year I also put googly eyes on family photos.

The last couple of nights I’ve done

elves in my bra hanging from a radiator with a sign saying “ help we’re booby trapped”
elves in fridge with a sign “we’re chilling”
I’ve seen one with a bath of water & croc shoes with a sign saying “danger, croc infested water” I need to do that one

Oh google eyes on photos is ace!

We so far have had them make paper snowflakes, break the tv, brought the elf on the shelf tonie for his tonic box and now they have gift wrapped the tv and tv remote.

Don't, whatever you do, cut up their favourite Pokemon card (even if it's replacement). That never goes down well.

Don’t know if mentioned (haven’t RTFT) but one year I clingfilmed the toilet and put a thin layer of porridge oats over the clingfilm. Balanced elf there with a spoon. Gives the appearance of him having
filled the entire toilet bowl.

Aha this sounds amazing. Sadly too many of us in this house who need to go every 2 hours on the dot to make this one work, but I hope someone else can make use of this one because it sounds like just the right sort of funny.

  • googly eyes on everything (my toaster still has them on from a couple of years ago!)…googly eyes on things in DC lunchbox
  • Wrapping DC’s lunchbox contents in wrapping paper
  • Drawing on family photos with dry wipe marker (moustaches, etc)
  • covering the floor with foil
  • drawing on my face with face paint

My DD’s favourites:

Reading The Night Before Christmas to all of her Sylvanian Families characters.
Stealing cookies - head first upside down in the biscuit barrel.
Made a paper chain of little elf shaped men, with the bits of cut out paper scattered around him.
Looking at one of her sticker books, with stickers stuck all over himself, a doll and a teddy bear.
Sprawled on the floor with paper and crayons, in the middle of drawing a reindeer.

I've seen this on Pinterest and I've a roll of red organza on top of the cupboard, and some battery operated lights stashed away.

DS just won't go to sleep though tonight so I feel like I am bashing my head on a brick wall. I can guarantee if I set my alarm half an hour earlier to do it in the morning he'll still wake up 5 minutes before it goes off.

One of the kids lost a tooth so I got the tooth fairy involved.

We are days away from another tooth coming out, this is so clever. Stealing this idea.

We had our elf making porridge on the hob for Goldilocks (DD’s OG doll) and the three bears (big, medium and baby teddy) this morning. It got a wonderful reaction from DD(7)!

Help! I’ve managed to secure a large elf balloon for this evenings antics but I don’t know how to utilise it alongside the other elves. Any ideas??

WheresBillGrundyNow · 17/12/2025 23:28

Put him in a pink Barbie robe plus lipstick and eyeshadow and a little turban and surrounded him by open cosmetics containers and cotton balls.

Dressed him in a raincoat and hat and hid him in a welly.

Bought white kinetic sand. It came in a plastic tray. Put him in it making a snow man and generally frolicking in his little winter wonderland. There was a fake igloo and stuff came with it

In the fridge drinking a can of beer

Tonight’s effort was them wrapping the school bags in loo roll. They loved when elfy wrote on bathroom mirror in lipstick. In fact any time elf writes seems to go down well but I haven’t done much of that. I bought a pack of elf snap for the elves to play and kids were delighted to keep that. Oh and they had a wedding with various teddies watching.

I resisted so long but started last year. Actually it’s quite fun and this year I’ve made more effort, mainly after speaking to my nephews GF who is 17, she showed me all the elf antics her parents did for her and they were so good. It gave me a boost, thinking, this is only for a couple of years and I could see those were great memories for her.
