Novelty Advent Cals!

Hello lovely MN folk

I just wanted to humble brag that I treated myself to a novelty advent calendar and just wondered what non- traditional advent calendars y’all have bought or are thinking of buying?

Mine is the Bonne Maman jam one. 24 delectable flavours and I’ve succumbed already lol. Today I opened and had strawberry and rhubarb on my toast amd it was divine like so fruity and tangy! I had a dollop of the caramel, cinnamon and apple on my porridge also.

Does anyone else want to share any of their best advent buys - past or present?☺️

My brother's birthday is 30th November so I have sent quite a few to him over the years.

Pork scratchings.
Tea.
Cheese.
Keyrings.
Male grooming.
Build a radio kit.
Spices.
Crisps / snacks.
Popcorn.

Oh wow! I also love the idea of the kit and it being ready on Xmas eve!

I'm considering a tea one this year as I'm off coffee following an illness and we have plenty of good coffee.

Hope you’re feeling better ❤️. Oh you’ll be spoiled for choice with the tea ones!

I’d been trying to resist the Bonne Maman calendar and now I want it again! I ended up getting a tea/coffee/hot choc one that was recommended on another thread. Thankfully it hasn’t arrived yet - I don’t think it will last until 1 December either!

😁
Honestly I’m not even a jam person but I’ve started having a slice of toast every morning as part of a new diet plan and was getting bored of the large never ending jar of strawberry jam that looked like it was going to last the next 10 years 😅. I can’t believe how varied the selection is like I think approx 20 different flavours and then 3 of the hazelnut chic spread. I’m so bad I’ve gone completely rogue and am even opening the days in the wrong order haha. I really wanted to try the strawberry and rhubarb one and it did not disappoint! Never thought I’d be so thrilled by jam of all things but here we are! 😂

I had a tea light one last year and that was lovely. A different scent every day.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 15/10/2025 16:05

Lakrids & Bullow one...I LOVE their liquorice so buy one for myself and send one to my parents every year...its currently taunting me from the shelf and the urge to open is STRONG

I had that one a few years ago and loved it! But please stop yourself! It’s against the law of Christmas to open early!

I’m getting DS a fishing one I think, and a Joe and Seph popcorn one. 2 cos I couldn’t choose!

Haha. I’m blaming it on suddenly being catapulted into peri!

Aww that’s sweet, because it’s such a drawn out present as it were, I’m sure he’ll always remember the advent cals you bought him 😊

Well don’t look to me for advice 🤣

Do love liquorice though! And I’ll be very…very impressed if they manage to survive an entire 6 weeks! We won’t judge anyways 😁

When I am given some of their liquorice I barely pause for breath until I have scoffed the lot. There’s plenty of treat food I enjoy but L&B liquorice is the only thing where I simply cannot control myself.
I am a firm believer in the laws of Christmas but if DH buys me this advent calendar, I don’t think it will make it past 3rd December

bridgetreilly · 15/10/2025 16:34

I’ve had the Bonne Maman one a couple of times and really enjoyed it. There are flavours you just don’t get in the big pots. I think it’s pretty good value. One year it came with a really nice hardback cookbook and I think lat year you also got a full sized pot of chocolate hazelnut spread. Yum.

This year I have gone with a tea calendar from Fortnums for £35. I figure it would cost a LOT more than that to have a cup of tea at Fortnums every day! And again, it includes blends I just wouldn’t be able to buy whole packets of.

MoominMai · 14/10/2025 21:18

Ooh, don’t think I’ve ever seen one of those!

My friend and I have made these for each other the last few years. It’s really fun.

MoominMai · 15/10/2025 16:52

@IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece @SandrenaIsMyBloodType honestly I thought I had the best advent calendar but y’all making me want this L&B liquorice dammit! I just googled it and it looks heavenly 😭

I want the BM one too. I barely ever even eat jam, and even then it's usually stuff I've made myself ... 😂

Yes, I think if you buy it direct from their site you get that bonus large jar but I think it was slightly cheaper on Amazon and honestly I ain’t got no business messing with a full jar of their choc spread 😅.

Yes I agree about the tea. Also just getting allows you chance to sample a few flavours you otherwise may never come across 😊

Right?! I only have a single slice of toast a day that it could ever go on yet I want the whole selection thank you very much! 😁

I used to buy my Dad the Snaffling Pig pork scratching advent calendar but it only ever lasted a few days.

Trentdarkmore · 15/10/2025 19:21

I've never had one before, but was about to treat myself to the bonne maman one on your recommendation. Then saw it has hazelnut spread in and I have a nut allergy.
Are there any other good jam ones?

It truly is, it's such high quality. absolutely fabulous stuff

RedRiverShore5 · 15/10/2025 19:25

I have also got the jam one, I get it each year

tripleginandtonic · 14/10/2025 16:14

Just buy the jams. Be better value

There are jam flavours in the advent calendar that are not sold otherwise.

Oh no!

Okay, so I’ve pasted over the full range of what’s included in the box below. There’s 24 mini jars and only 3 seem to have the nuts to my eye. If you buy it direct from Amazon it’s currently £26 which honestly compared to similar quality (and smaller) food advent cals I’d say is a fair price. If the below selection appeals to you - and I should say I’ve only tried 3 so far but the quality is supreme with full bodied flavours 😊, (and you don’t mind paying that price for them bar 3 which would make cute little stocking fillers if you popped them in a transparent bag with little ribbon on maybe) then I’d contact BM via their website and ask exactly how many are nut-free as if it were me, then I’d still pay the price as said so as not to miss out on the others which could be plentiful still!

PS unfortunately I can’t personally recommend any other brands as this is my first jam cal!

23 x 30g mini jars of special conserves, spreads and caramels:

  • Apple with caramel and cinnamon
  • Apricot with orange blossom honey
  • Blueberry and lychee with rose
  • Cherry with pink berries
  • Cherry with violet leaf
  • Damson plum and pear with star anise
  • Fig with cardamom
  • Mango and ginger
  • Orange, guava and lime
  • Peach and blackcurrant with Sichuan pepper
  • Pear and mandarin with cinnamon
  • Pineapple with rum and vanilla
  • Raspberry and lychee
  • Redcurrant and raspberry
  • Rhubarb and strawberry
  • Strawberry and passion fruit
  • White nectarin and peach with lemon verbena
  • Yuzu, orange and grapefruit
  • Madagascar vanilla caramel
  • Salted butter caramel
  • Hazelnut and Cocoa spread x3
Plus: Surprise festive gift on Christmas Eve…

I won the Bonne Maman jam one a few years ago, it was fabulous.
Got one for my nephew too, he also loved that all of the jam names were in French as well.
Last year I got my older teens chocolate ones from the Lindt shop, usually they just pick some kind of chocolate one from the supermarket.
This year I have treated myself to the Gruum beauty Advent calendar because it was reduced from £268 to £50 and i like the gruum stuff I've tried

Howyoualldoworkme · 15/10/2025 20:03

For the past 3 years I've bought DH the Walkers shortbread Advent Calendar which he opens when he has his mid morning cup of tea. Very nice apparently.
Last year I treated myself to a Christmas cake one (got it half price in an offer) I'm the only person in the house who likes Christmas cake so it was all mine!
