As always it’s a “what do I buy for a man” one! Need to get it bought quite urgently as family meet up at the start of Oct and it’s now been decided we swap Christmas presents as we all live at the farthest corners of the UK and won’t meet up again for ages. DM has a horror of sending parcels as one got lost one year so to minimise stress I just go with it!
BIL. He’s in his 60s works as an aircraft engineer for BA. Loves BA, plays golf but has everything golf related, likes football but again has everything team based you can think of, drinks 1 particular kind of spirit which you don’t normally get gift sets for. Fussy about food. Likes sweets but I tend to get him sweets and socks quite a lot. Likes expensive technology but that’s beyond my £15 max budget. Aaargggh!
any ideas welcome as ones that don’t suit him might help with ddad, DS and some other male pressies!

had thought of an aircraft manual from the 1950s as he does love planes but as its work related is that naff?

Why does the drink need to be in a gift set? Can’t you just buy him a bottle of the drink? I would have thought he would have all the manuals, air related stuff that’s common to buy, he probably has all the niche things you wouldn’t know where to look or find (or if he already has them).

I’d stick to consumables, I think people are trying to cut down on token tat now (not that your present would be tat, but it could end up being!).

Concorde tour.

AuntieDen · 24/09/2025 13:24

if you can stretch your budget a little you can get Meccano planes for £20 - I saw the tractor and landrover kits last week and they looked like nice little presents for someone who will remember meccano from their childhood and likes the item

if its absolutely £15 then how about golfing consumables? balls, tees, whatever those cloths they use to wipe their balls are...

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 24/09/2025 13:25

What about one of those Haynes manuals for a plane of some sort? The jokey ones?

BaritoneBetty · 24/09/2025 13:26

Jigsaw puzzle of vintage planes? Only good if he enjoys jigsaws tho.

A nice wash bag
Warm gloves / heated gloves for watching football or golf

If he likes sweets, I'd just get him fancy sweets e.g. www.fortnumandmason.com/christmas-coal-250g

jocktamsonsbairn · 24/09/2025 13:48

Thanks all, the particular spirit he likes is really expensive and we have all agreed to set a £15 limit and stick to it! I’d be told off if I “ruined it for everyone” (SIL 😂)
As far as I know he doesn’t have manuals but he may have tons in a cupboard I don’t know about! The heated gloves may be a good idea as he doesn’t watch his local team play but doesn’t drink tea or coffee.
He really does not want or need any golf related stuff as he’s always trying to give it away! Don’t fancy asking if he needs a ball wiping cloth though it did make me laugh!
he’s been on Concorde and as much as he likes planes isn’t a big traveller. But thank you all for ideas! I like the meccano planes too although never seen him with meccano or Lego. He does have wee grandkids who might like to help so that could be an idea!
thank you! Off to shop now.

Posted this on another thread, but The Tank Museum has amazing deals on all sorts of vehicle/military-type books. I’ve got some real bargains, definitely worth a look!

Rocknrollstar · 25/09/2025 09:45

DH was never interested in Lego but has been given a couple of sets recently and enjoyed them. If the present doesn’t has to last until Christmas how about a ready wrapped cheese board from a supermarket with a packet of biscuits and a bottle of beer or miniature of his favoured drink? Well done to you all for sticking to £15 limit by the way. Pressed send and then thought of the wireless chargers for mobile phones that are magnetic and sit on the back of a phone. You can get those for £15.

Oooh the wireless charger might work!! Thank you!

Hi OP, I know you said he has football paraphernalia but I recently saw on Instagram these books made up of all the newspaper sports headlines/articles for the team in question. It looked like a nice gift for a football fan (I am thinking of getting one for my dad).

Other ideas:
-portable charger
-nice glass for drinking the alcohol he likes
(Or a Pipette if it’s whisky he drinks, I got my husband nice stuff from the whisky shop)
-hot water bottle
-travel charger kit
-travel size aftershave
-wash bag
-nice moisturiser/spf

OMGitsnotgood · 26/09/2025 17:18

Airfix plane?

XmasCrumble · 26/09/2025 17:32

Ignore my suggestion above, the sports newspaper books are £60!

FranklyIgiveadamn · 26/09/2025 17:52

What about a nice Mechanical pencil… loads to choose from here, maybe cheaper on Amazon?
