Anyone else over advent calendars?

I’m considering not bothering with advent calendars this year. It was a struggle last year to find something suitable for everyone, and felt like we were just getting them for the sake of it.

Except that it’s been one of the few traditions that the teens have held over from childhood.

Another for pictures or chocolate!

Starlight40 · 19/08/2025 16:50

We bought our son a Lego advent calendar when he was 6. He is now 19 and I knew when I bought that I started something! His brother is 16 and has decided he just wants a chocolate one. Last year he had a Pokemon one. They are so expensive. Our daughter will probably want a Smiggle one. I refuse to pay over £15 for it though.x

Last year I paid out for an M&S beauty one. I don't think beauty advent calendars are worth it as they include things i don't wear . A couple of years ago I bought a Christmas bracelet one from Etsy. Day 1 was the bracelet and the next 24 were charms, some of which weren't festive so the bracelet can be used all year.

Just going to leave this here.

I buy 10 chocolate ones every year for my children, partners and grandchildren. Wouldn’t dream of stopping!

crazycatladie · 19/08/2025 22:23

Stopped the Lego ones last year and reverted back to chocolate ones. Would love to go back to the picture ones but I’m not sure my children would like them.

Carzycat · 19/08/2025 22:31

I get the picture ones too. Every year I hope to finda nativity scene behind window 24 and last year it finally happened!

I’ve found my people @MissyB1 and @MaturingCheeseball 😊

I sent my daughter a gorgeous picture one of woodland animals that was recommended here. It was for her first year at uni, she bought it home and
has kept it here.

NightPuffins · 19/08/2025 23:04

@Tulipvase That sounds lovely! Do you remember where you got it from?

80smonster · 19/08/2025 23:21

Only like the Liberty one.

I’ll have a look tomorrow but it might have been art file maybe? I ordered from Amazon and had it sent to her halls.

Ooh, I've just looked this up as it really appealed to me, but, it's unavailable on Amazon ( "We don't know when or if this product will be back in stock") and out of stock from Selfridges...and is > 17 dollars shipping from US.
Where do you get yours from, as a matter of interest? I'd love this.

It's in stock online at Selfridges now

reversegear · 19/08/2025 23:40

Where do you get the old picture ones from? I think that sounds lovely.

GRCP · 20/08/2025 11:35

Yes I have decided just chocolate for the 2 x DC this year

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 20/08/2025 11:39

I found myself upping the ante every year trying to get nicer and nicer advent calendars, until I thought ;why am I bothering? It's is quite literally CHRISTMAS in a month, why do people need stuff beforehand?' Then I went back to the glittery snow scenes with doors that reveal a snowman or a bouncy ball, and everything was much more relaxed.

Shipshape1 · 20/08/2025 15:27

I've done lego ones, other toy ones but went back to chocolate last year. Lindt ones but I think I might get myself a picture one if anyone can recommend one?

incognitomouse · 25/08/2025 10:22

Just Cadbury ones here generally. The only one I fall for is the Lego one for my DS.

Waitingfordoggo · 25/08/2025 10:29

MrsMoastyToasty · 31/07/2025 16:54

I have a fabric one that I just fill with roses or celebrations chocolates every year.

This. My mum made a big fabric one with pockets for my DCs. We just put in chocolate coins or sometimes a bigger chocolate like a Malteser reindeer etc. They’ve never expressed disappointment with that or asked for Lego/cosmetics calendars etc.

I resent the rampant capitalism that’s so hard to get away from these days. I’m already spending money on Christmas gifts for my DCs, I’m not going to also spend £50+ on a bloody advent calendar, even if I can afford to.

Bonne Maman advent calendar

Recommended! Except I got mine from Ocado a couple of days after Xmas for £13 so I was predisposed to love it 🤣

BadAmbassador · 25/08/2025 11:32

Last two years I’ve treated myself to the M&S one. I usually manage to give some of the contents away in stockings for adult DD and keep all the best bits myself 🤣

YumYa · 25/08/2025 11:37

On YouTube watch Robbie Knox world's most expensive advent calendar. He's very entertaining.

daffodilandtulip · 25/08/2025 20:58

I searched for this thread to see what I fancied treating myself to this year, and now I just want a traditional picture one!

Cyclingmummy1 · 28/08/2025 19:54

I've made a fabric one for this year, don't know if I'll use it but it's lovely. Last year we just had chocolate so I might fill this one with chocs.

DS is sorting out his lego and we have 7 Lego ones!

FurForksSake · 28/08/2025 20:07

I do an advent chimney for my pre-teens, I’ve just ordered some random small bits from Temu and then some days will be a variety of Christmas chocolates. I’ve considered stopping or just going over to chocolate ones but they love it.

WhereAreAllTheHairBobbles · 28/08/2025 20:11

All 4 of our dcs only ever want a big standard Cadbury one. I've offered toy / make up / alcohol ones and not interested thankfully as makes it easy for me
