I know it's the (fucking) 6th of December and I really should have this sorted but I'm not. I've just become unstuck on 11 year old DD, she wants skin care (for gods sake I hate the capitalist patriarchy) but I really wanted to get her something that would delight the not-for-much-longer little girl in her. (She will be getting plenty of skin care). She's quite arty so I'd thought of a drawing tablet but hadn't realised that they all need to be connected to a computer. She's only got a tablet and I only have a (basic) laptop so I'm not sure it will work.

What can I get her? I am all out of ideas

The budget for all her gifts is £120

Would a digital pen work with her tablet?
Bluetooth headphones
Portable speaker
Brush pens
Good paper

My arty 11 year old watches a you tube creator called Peculiar Ashley who makes weird, spooky art out of junk and clay etc. She is getting some clay, resin, shrinky dink, glue and tools for model making so she can create some Peculiar Ashley art.

Get her a really unusual miniature from Etsy. You can find miniatures of virtually anything, and they are often quite well made. It will delight the lasting "child" part of her that likely still responds to tiny things, and you can customise what you get to suit her interests as specifically as you want to.

To give some examples of how a I have given these and it has worked well, I gave one to an older female relative which looked exactly like a much beloved family pet (the mini version is sitting on a tiny footstool), and just today as part of our couples advent as gave a miniature piece of kitchen storage to my spouse (the storage is for a particular food item that my spouse excels at making). They are basically dolls house size items but not really toys! More like tiny hobby items.

Bonus is they are very affordable and would be a charming small gift without using much of the budget.

If she has longer hair I would also consider getting an interesting / special claw clip. There are some really nice ones by Sui Ava that are prettier and more special than just a basic grooming item. Only if she has long enough hair to use it though!

Another idea is some washi tape from Etsy, because you can get really unusual and creative ones and it's very flexible in use. Can be used to stick up inspiration drawings, tear out images from magazines, etc, in her room (without damage like from sellotape), but also great in a journal, in cards, crafts and so on.

My arty DD got this tabletop easel set last Christmas when she was 11...and I was so very grateful that she was showing no interest in skincare! This year it's ALL about skincare 🙄
Easel set

A decent set of Posca pens along with a basket of 'blanks' to design was a big hit too.

My 10 year old was similar. Her list was all UGG boots and beauty brands I’ve never heard of. I found it quite sad tbh. She doesn’t watch YouTube and we don’t go in for that sort of stuff as a family.

she has in her stocking:
lego (one of those flower ones)
A Nat Geo grow your own crystals set
Two books I think she’ll like Jacqueline Wilson sleepover and one about the secret diary of a 12 year old girl
a book on natural skincare for kids with recipes etc for her to try (my skincare compromise!)
chocolate pizza
bubble tea kit

3d pen

Sewing machine (I saw a small one in Aldi special buys for £17 last week)

Fun card game like Taco Goat Cheese Pizza or Kids against Maturity

Instax camera

These are all such good ideas, thank you. I've spent a happy hour browsing etsy too, trying to exercise self restraint. It's not somewhere I would have thought of looking.

Is she into any characters or dressing up? Mine wanted a purple wig for that birthday and rollerskates for her growing feet. Maybe a cute humidifier with a kawaii theme could be a cross-over kids/beauty item? I'm sure i saw one on Amazon...

OrangesCinammonIvy · 06/12/2024 22:11

Mines 12 and isn't interested in skincare at all.
Aside from t tree oil neither is dd 17 but will be getting basic makeup product.

Dd 12, sprocket, prints out pics from phone, skate board!!
Smores set
Water colour brushes
Slime

OrangesCinammonIvy · 06/12/2024 22:13

Oh yes and lego.

I think it's really important to show children what goes on behind oz veil eg why magazine or insta sells us stuff.
But at the same time it's their journey to make??

lollylawyer · 06/12/2024 22:16

Just placemarking as also have 11 year old and feel similarly

JM88Jen · 06/12/2024 22:34

I have got my 12 yr Dd a personalised paint by numbers canvas and a cute colouring book of Skincare with alcohol marker pens set.

She is into skincare now too so I bought a few things from Boots as they had a deal on.

It's really hard these days, trying to keep them young as they are but they just want to grow up super fast!
