Christmas road trip

Our Christmas Eve will be spent picking up children from various cities in the country as they finish work for Christmas. 2 of them can only be home for a couple of days because of work, so I want to make sure the drive is super cheesy Christmas themed. We have PJs for everyone to put on, Santa hats and music. Any other suggestions? My kids are all very cool 20 somethings but will totally embrace the ridiculous.
it’s a 4 hr drive to child 1, then 2 hrs to child 2, 2 more hours to child 3 and then 45 mins home so we can build in festive stops along the way ☺️

Just had a little watery eye moment, reading through this.

I also think it could be a good idea to get to the first pick up, the night before.

I wish you luck and light traffic.

What about a kids Christmas travel book? You used to be able to get them, with things to spot, stickers, jokes and trivia about Christmas.

Put a few drops of a Christmas scented oil, on a tissue, and tuck into the heater vent.

What kind parents you are. Ignore the naysayers, attitude is everything. No one knows what the future may bring, enjoy your opportunity to be with your loved ones.

This sounds brilliant. I fancy doing this and I've not even got anyone to go and pick up!

TheSandgroper · 22/11/2024 07:20

I think it’s a fabulous idea and the more twee the better. As you say, memories are made at these times.

I might also suggest a walk through https://www.reddit.com/r/VEDC/ for ideas to keep the drive moving in adverse conditions.

Congratulations to you both for raising children that are looking forward to the trip.

What a lovely idea. Definitely go up the day before to get a head start and have a wonderful time with your family, Driving Home For Christmas 🎵🎶

CrepuscularCritter · 22/11/2024 07:45

I am excited for you, and will be sending all my best wishes for the journey. It's the kind of thing my mum would have done, and definitely needs a road trip playlist. So bring on the fleecy blankets, the snacks, the big coffees and the best recommended services (does the Just Off The Motorway suggestion list still exist?). Have a great road trip!

OMGitsnotgood · 22/11/2024 08:07

I think it all sounds fantastic but are you really expecting them to wear Christmas pyjamas in the car? What if they need to stop at services to go to the loo?

Why not? And if they need the loo, they put a coat on and go?

Preppingdonkey · 22/11/2024 09:08

We do a 10 hour car trip most years to France (did it as a dc too). Snacks, entertainment, comfort, regular stops to toilet/stretch your legs are key.

Ruri · 22/11/2024 09:22

Sounds like an amazing drive. I think elaborately decorating the inside of the car with lots of tinsel could add extra Christmas joy.

TiramisuThief · 22/11/2024 09:29

I think this is a lovely idea OP.

I love this so much. You sound a fantastic family. Would love a Christmas Eve update (but you'll be worn out and elated!!)

BarbadosItsCloserThanYouThink · 22/11/2024 17:04

OP this sounds lovely! I hope you have the best journey!

SirChenjins · 22/11/2024 17:07

I’d definitely drive up the day before - or even a couple of days and then have nice lazy time in a hotel and doing a bit of sightseeing while she’s at work. Christmas Eve driving can be hideous - the novelty of mince pies, pjs and I went to the shops and bought a… wears off after a few hours of being stuck in traffic (ask me how I know?!). Enjoy Christmas, it’s lovely you’re all getting together 😊

We did this when ours were same age!!! I took the makings of hot chocolate ( marshmallows, squirty cream, flakes) x we warmed the milk on a camping stove in a layby! Blankets x pillows x santa hats x a stop off at McDonalds in their PJs. Cheesey Xmas songs. We also handed out chocolate to homeless people. It was a magical trip.
