I'm looking for a gift but not sure if it's real!

So I have an idea in my mind for my son, but I'm not sure if it's a real thing or made up!
So he's 7. He loves drawing and has one of them little drawing pads from Amazon. The one with the black screen and magnetic pen... you know the type?

I'd love to get him an older version of this! Like a drawing pad where you could change the pen colour or size etc. larger screen.

I've Google drawing pads but I can k ly find things that hook up to a computer or laptop.

Is there such thing as the drawing pad I'm thinking of? I'm aware you can download apps etc but I want to get him something that takes him away from his iPad!

Does anyone have any ideas? :)

Is it an etch a sketch you are looking for??

TheMethodicalMeerkat · 19/11/2024 11:27

Are you thinking of a graphic drawing tablet? I don’t know much about them other than I’ve seen them mentioned on here in the last few years. Worth a google to see if it’s suitable.

autumngirl714 · 19/11/2024 11:29

No, he's a bit too old and cool for one of those 😂🫣
I'll attach a pic of what he has now! They're really good actually but small screens and not very versatile!

I'm looking for a gift but not sure if it's real!

Yes I've seen these online! But from what I can see they all hook up to laptops etc. we don't have a laptop so I was wondering if they do handheld ones?

Some of them (like the Huion) or possibly all of them, I don't know enough about it, hook up to mobiles as an alternative & it's just to activate the app, so you're only looking at and drawing on the tablet, it doesn't require looking at the phone screen.

Doesn't completely solve the problem as I guess you'd need to hook up your phone when he wanted to use it, but at least it's not staring at a computer screen.

There's a video here if you scroll through the photos.

You can get a tablet and an app which does it. But then you would need a tablet :(

Singleandproud · 19/11/2024 11:34

Why not get a whiteboard and the multicoloured berol board pens?

FeelingSad2024 · 19/11/2024 11:35

Can you link the one he has now please? I can't find it just off the image. My DD5 would enjoy something like that for Christmas.

I think you need a graphics tablet rather than a drawing tablet. There's a big difference between the two. Graphics tabs can get very expensive, very fast.

This is the one I use t it's £529
XPPen Artist Pro 16 (Gen 2) Drawing Tablet with 2.5K QHD Full-laminated Screen, 99% sRGB Color Gamut, 16K Pen Pressure, 16" Graphics Pen Display with Built-in Stand, Supports Windows, macOS, Android: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

This is a more budget friendly one (£209): HUION Kamvas Pro 13 Graphic Tablet with Screen, 13,3 inch drawing tablet with screen, Full Laminated, with Adjustable Stand and Battery-Free Stylus, Ideal for Work from Home & Remote Learning: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

This one is quite budget friendly too (£169) and I've heard good things about it and if it's for a 7 year old I doubt he'll complain about any of it's shortcomings: Frunsi T11 Pro Drawing Tablet No Computer needed-Standalone Drawing Tablet -10.1 inch FHD Display,Octa-Core CPU,Pre-installed Sketchbook & Flipaclip - Ideal for Beginners, Digital Artists, Designers: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

Join TikTok and I promise you you'll have an advert for something similar pop up in no time. I keep getting an ad for something similar, but it's like a glass screen? I don't pay much attention because my kids are not in that age range but the algorithm should take you there (or you can just go onto the shop bit and search).

Magna doodle?

TeenToTwenties · 19/11/2024 12:35

We got DD a tablet for drawing last year. Effectively it is like an iPad but has drawing software preloaded. Also hooks to Internet.

Beware lots of drawing tablet ads are very misleading an imply lots of features they don't have (a bit like 'not actual game play' ads). So be careful.

Do you mean an IDoodle or a Megasketcher? You can find them on Amazon or at Argos.
