My DD is a 'young' 9 year old almost 10 in Jan. at the moment I have a million Barbie things she's suggested!! But do you have other ideas? Not skincare or anything like that, she doesn't have a clue.

My DD turned 9 yesterday! Main present was a laptop. Other gifts she loves are Tech Deck (finger skateboard) bits, blow pens, pottery wheel, Harry Potter clothes, a Sea Monkey kit, a squishmallow, a flip book kit, Harry Potter lego...

VegTrug · 17/11/2024 22:58

I am LOVING the fact that some kids are still playing with Sylvanian familles! They're so adorable but I assumed she was way too old to have them so I've put them all in my mum's loft! With DD's permission obviously.

VegTrug · 17/11/2024 22:59

@GlassHouseBlue Holy crap! Her friends in year 5 have phones?!?! That's appalling....

I've signed my county's pact to 'Delay Smartphones until Year 9'

Heyheyitsanotherday · 17/11/2024 23:18

Does she like Harry Potter? There’s a Harry Potter polly pocket. And I think I saw a wicked one too

Twistybrancher · 17/11/2024 23:20

It’s difficult but it doesn’t have to be the extremes- buying phones, skincare, designer labels.

You can throw in a couple of bits that are maybe a bit older, but that she wouldn’t notice much. So instead of buying Claire’s lip balm, you can get something that maybe a bit more on trend. I wouldn’t buy much, but just little bits so she feels included with friends.

But you can also go for all the things you know she loves.

Good things this age:

  • Clay beads sets (which lots of the girls then sell at school)
  • New desk, with lovely accessory pencil pots etc
  • More Grown up vanity table. Not to be covered make up, but maybe a new hair brush and some pretty photo frames that she can put her fav pictures in
  • bookcase, filled with lots of lovely new books
  • Crocs
  • Jellycat or squishmallows
  • Cool sleepover bag, filled with new pjs, cuddly toy, fluffy slippers
  • Baking set, apron, bowls, utensils and some cook books and some ingredients.

One thing that’s on trend for girls this age…is LoveShackFancy. Which is expensive but it’s uber cool for young girls. Think pretty florals, big bows and tiered dresses. So not everything on trend is necessarily ‘grown up’

My dd who is 9.5:
barbies
lol dolls
monster high
tiny tears baby doll
my generation doll
squishmallows
Moriah Elizabeth merch
Stanley cup 😅
Dinosaur toys
Pokemon plush
Hello kitty merch
Anything with a guinea pig on it

APurpleSquirrel · 18/11/2024 00:37

My DD turned 10 a few months ago - she is interested in skincare a bit - but mostly Simple stuff. I've got her a few Body Shop bits & HP themed smellies.
She loves sharks so had a sharks trust hoodie & tshirts. Lots of books. She had her ears pierced, so a few stud earrings. A desk light, sketch books, jewellery box & and a zoo keeper experience.
For Christmas we've got her tickets to see War Horse, a karaoke machine, books, Taylor Swift guitar music books, onesie, more shark themed stuff & a card game.

DelphiniumBlue · 18/11/2024 00:43

Lots of the children I know of that age covet nice pen sets - Posca is one of the brands that they really seem to like ( as do I ,someone bought me a set last Christmas and I love them!) They are mega expensive though. But very popular for arty kids.

Oh yeah I had a basket for them at her 9th!!! Birthday party!!!

I'm not encouraging any skin care so young. She's literally still into her sylvanian, into her craft, Barbie, she loves playing piano and her clarinet. She loves netball so I'm thinking a new netball for her too.

DS is unusual in his class - year 5 - as he walks home alone but has no watch or phone to be able to contact us/for me to track him. I think the risk of a phone is greater than the risk of walking home alone tbh (risk of everything that comes with phone/addiction etc, but also the risk of being distracted by phone when crossing the road etc!)

We’re hoping dumb phones will become more available by the time he’s in secondary - looking likely! But phones, apps etc essential for secondary by the looks of it, so smart phone probably needed. It’s the social media that’s a no-no for me!

VegTrug · 20/11/2024 21:10

@CarrotPencil There's quite a few 'dumb' phones still on the market. We sold tonnes at Carphone warehouse (before they closed all the stores and got rid of us all!)

vickylou78 · 21/11/2024 00:35

My daughter is 9 and turns 10 in January and she has on her list:
A DIY Rolife dollhouse kit
Bitzee
Our generation doll and accessories
Rainbow High doll
Lol doll
Calendar
Pen Creator studio
Books
Mini verse making kits
Punirunes digital pet
Real Little Cavapoo puppy

She's also into Harry Potter, Lego, pen and writing sets, Sylvanian families, Polly Pocket, Roblox, Monster High.

Not sure what of above we will get (as we can't afford to get everything as it's huge list!!) but we will choose a few things and usually also get her some clothes either for Christmas or birthday (T-shirt,New pyjamas, Hoodie)

body spray, hair clips, sweets, chocolate, bath bomb, lip gloss etc. in her stocking

Planning to get bike for her birthday in January.

jakesmommy · 21/11/2024 01:02

My daughter turns 9 on November 26th (along with her twin brother), for her birthday I have bought her Stitch duvet set, blanket and pillow from Asda, Stitch pyjamas and oversized hoody set, 36 pc modelling clay from Amazon, 2 x books she asked for, Hello Kitty Funko Pop and some random little arts and craft bits.
For Christmas she has a bike, Miniverse Harry Potter Potions room set, Harry Potter wand, Disney Bitzee, fashion design activity books, dual tip artist pens and Wednesday Addams Monster High doll.

TadpolesInPool · 21/11/2024 11:02

Could you get her some fun piano music? I also played piano and clarinet and I did loads of different composers because of my teachers. But for fun my mum bought me the sheet music for some musicals I liked (Cats, Les Mis, Phantom of the Opera) and I still play them today.

FiddleFigs · 21/11/2024 15:55

DD is 10, turning 11 in January and her list is all still toys and dolls 💗
Some things she's getting:

  • mini karaoke machine
  • a Schleich horse set and extra figurines
  • a Jellycat
  • a Switch game
  • Legami pens/stationery
  • books
  • a Lego Friends set
  • a sewing/craft kit (Sew Mini Treats)
  • lip gloss
  • a vanity mirror (with bulbs around it)

Her birthday is a week after Xmas, so need to think of something suitably impressive for that too!

Yes - I'm getting DD Taylor Swift music books - hers cover guitar (which my DD plays), piano & vocals. Might be an idea if she likes TS? Or try other artists?

Tiberius12 · 22/11/2024 11:06

My almost 10 year old has asked for lots of books, slime, rainbow high dolls, a 3d pen, a sewing machine and air dry clay.

Bear2014 · 22/11/2024 13:33

DD is 10, for her 10th birthday she got her own iPad, she's not getting a phone for ages and nor are her friends. Some ideas, from last year and this year:

Lava lamp
Cool fairy lights for her room
Bluetooth headphones
Bath bombs
Instax camera.
Sol de Janeiro perfume
Bedroom decor - framed prints, mirror, clock etc
Any updated furniture, bright colour metal locker as a bedside table? Upgraded desk for homework? Duvet cover sets/throw pillows
Art supplies - Posca pens, tie dye, watercolour set and paper
Journal/diary/notebooks/stationery
Lottie Brooks / Babysitter club graphic novels both very popular

whosaoife04 · 22/11/2024 13:37

Squishmallows, books (my 11yo sister is big into the babysitters club), clay beads, Top Model sketchbooks

Carouselfish · 22/11/2024 13:55

Honestly, why should a 10 year old be into skincare? So joyless and self conscious. I think yours sounds right, the ones who are so teenage acting are the ones on social media far too young.

Anyway, hatchimal type alive 'pets', board games, art supplies, t-shirt design stuff - my 9 year old would.love. she got a bean bag last year that we've had a lot of use from, lava lamp, Smart Games, skateboard,...

aylis · 24/11/2024 00:23

Sticki rolls (had never heard of them until this year), a bead spinner, stationary especially all different kinds of pens. Someone mentioned Posca pens, they're definitely the thing with my daughter's class just now.

Smyths has a fun looking fashion design thing which I've got my daughter as she loves dress to impress on Roblox, seeing if it will translate over in to a bit of craftiness.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 24/11/2024 00:26

StMarie4me · 17/11/2024 11:49

Please don't describe them as young for their age because they're not interested in skincare etc. They're actually age appropriate.

Books
Board games
Crafts
Squishmallows
Cutesy kawaii style things
Funko Pop! Figures
Monster High (there's a whole new range)
Rainbow high
Lego (there are sets for many collaborations such as Wicked etc)
Lanyards and badges
Cool bag

Have a great Christmas!

👏👏👏
