American Girl Doll

My DD has requested one of these. I now know the genuine ‘American Girl Doll’ is expensive. I’m wondering if it is in any way worth that money??! The ‘My Generation Doll’ is obviously massively cheaper and appears to be very similar. 🤔

My dd has one of each. On the surface, it’s hard to tell the difference between the two. They are both the same height, have relatively similar facial features and hair lengths. The difference can be felt, though. Overall, the AG doll quality is a bit better than Our Generation but not by a lot. The mechanics work better i.e. the legs, arms and head have better mobility. The AG doll’s hair has definitely held up better and it easier to brush through.

There are also design a friend dolls in argos. Same again but cheaper.

Thanks for the replies. It sounds like, as I thought, the cheaper but similar doll will bring as much joy as the expensive one!

how old is your daughter? Design a friend and our generation are great but they are not AG.

My dd loved AG and has a few. She used to read the catalogue religiously like a book. They all have back stories and lots of them had dvds which at a quick look appear to be on you tube now. There's a couple of films too.

However I do think half the fun is going to the store to get your doll and choose the outfits. They are unbelievable, you can have afternoon tea, get the dolls ears pierced, go to the salon etc but obviously they are all in the US.

If you’re in the UK I’m sure American girl dolls don’t delivery here. I had a look a few months ago unless it’s changed? Dd9 was looking at the customised ones. My generation are much cheaper and just as nice I think.

hi op, my dd age 13 has had 2 American girl dolls before when she was 8 & 9 I’m assuming you’re in the uk so we had to get them shipped in from America. They are amazing quality, clothes, hair etc,she has also has her fair share of our generation dolls and you can definitely tell the difference even down to the vinyl!! Little did I know when I ordered my dd’s first 2 dolls was that you can actually get them in the uk from a website called my doll collection, basically a lady ships the products in from American and sells them for a raised price!! My dd had actually asked for 2 American girl dolls this Christmas and we have got them from there and it’s far more easy than having to deal with customs! So yes American girl dolls are far more superior.

My DD had both the Argos version and the American Girl dolls. The Argos version is great, but the AG once you see it, is better.

I bought the doll from the AG shop in the Westfield Shopping CeNTRE, London (not Westfield Stratford, the other one!)

Hi, I’ve just looked for the AG store at Westfield and nothing is showing up. According to the AG website there are no official stores in the UK. How long ago was this pls?

i was planning a 250 mile journey from Liverpool to London after seeing your post 😊

My daughter has an AG doll and several OG dolls - she takes equal pleasure from all of them. Yes the AG doll is better quality from an adult point of view, but to children it is barely noticeable. I agree with a PP that the experience of the shop is really a big part of the fun. She does also really like the books that come with them with the back story.

We got our AG doll in May and DD is now asking for the remaining outfits for this particular doll for Xmas - there are some on ebay but at an even more outrageous price!

I would actually not agree that American Girl dolls are better quality than Our Generation. My DD’s AG doll’s hair has matted more quickly than the OG dolls. I also prefer the OG dolls’ facial expressions.

AG do deliver to the uk but are really eye wateringly expensive and in my view are not worth the price. There is definitely no AG store at Westfield either (there used to be something called ‘My London Girl’ but that was a different brand and is no longer there).

@Zoflorabore there is definitely no AG shops in the U.K. there used to be a shop called London Girl which I think was in the shopping centre at Queensway but long gone now.
