When to decorate

For context I'm due my baby Xmas week but do have a tendency to go a few weeks early. Our tradition is to have the house decorated for 1st December when we "turn on the lights". It takes a while so it's usually the weekend before the 1st that things are done.

I am usually OTT on Christmas decorations as in the whole house gets something and we have 4 trees, lots of garland etc.

I know I could scale back...but I don't want to lol.

I want to start putting bits up now. I thinking the garlands, or the shelf decor then slowly over the next few weeks add to it bit by bit.

Reasoning is I am already slowing down with this pregnancy, and I know if I wait until I usually do it I won't be able to do it all and likely won't enjoy it/have the patience for the children to help and join in. Then there is the chance that baby could arrive in or around that time too.

Anyone else think this is an acceptable excuse? Lol. Anyone think I'm daft for drip doing the decorating instead of doing it all at once?

Trying to convince myself here and find my people that also want Christmas sorted already.

PS - this is a lighthearted post.

Op do what suits you. At 8/9mths you have to go at the pace you can manage.

I remember writing Christmas cards in November so they were ready to post the year I was pregnant, and shopping was done then too.
December was planned to be chilled relaxing and fun with DC1

@Needanewname42 yes, you hit the nail on the head with "planned to be chilled and relaxing" for December. I ld rather it was just all done so I can enjoy DC, baby and my favourite time of year (and my children's tbf) I also need to factor in how busy December can get with school children...

I'm due the 2nd week of December - usually I decorate the last week of November but I'm doing it this weekend instead as 1) I may be having baby early, and more likely 2) I'm so bloody exhausted now, I wont manage putting the tree up at nearly 39 weeks pregnant!

Bringautumnnights · 14/11/2024 11:53

Also I wanted to wrap my presents and write my Christmas cards prior to baby being born, but wanted to do it in front of the tree still so putting it up early

Needanewname42 · 14/11/2024 11:57

@OnNaturesCourse what's stopping you? The feeling that it's too early?

DS was 5, and Baby due 24th, I needed to make sure Christmas happened.

In your position I would start doing bits now slowly and in your own time. Better than a mad panic which wouldn’t be enjoyable.

CandyCane457 · 14/11/2024 12:33

Don’t fight the urge- do it!

I don’t even have ch/babies due to think about, and I always do it the third week in November. I host friends the first weekend in December and I want it all done before then. I like to do all my shopping and wrapping in November too, so that by the time December comes around I can just relax and enjoy all the festive films and social events without a big to do list!

Don't forget everything you put up will need to be taken down when you are recovering with a newborn!!

That's what husbands are for!

MrsSunshine2b · 14/11/2024 13:32

Why not?

I'm itching to start decorating but DH has a hard limit of 1st December. I have sneaked up a "Days Until Christmas" Nutcracker I bought at Lidl, with the justification that it's a pre-Christmas ornament!

This is me too - I'm already feeling I'd struggle to do it all in a weekend so I'd never manage come December!

@Wigglypasta that's not my concern 😂😂 I can just turn the lights off if it's bothering me. I can just have some sparkle in January too.

I have zero recollection of when the trees came back down. I suspect DH did it before he finished his paternity leave. Which was after DC1 was back at school

Or maybe it was later, with the lights being switched off.

Well I did it.
Got Christmas out the attic and have been doing a bit each day - and by goodness I feel better for it. Organised.
