Are all of these pretty similar or are Magnatiles or others much better than the cheap ones?

I have bought Playmags and they are brilliant quality. Playmags and magnatiles are usually best for quality but just check the compatibility incase you want to mix brands etc as not all tiles are compatible

I think we have Mag Genius ones and they're brilliant and a lot cheaper than the proper magnatiles.

Got our set of Amazon and my two love them. They are not bandied about £20.

We get so much out of this toy as they build garages for the cars, towers, it get incorporated into other play.

Plus we take them to restaurants for them to play with while food comes

We have the real Magna-tiles and they are hands down some of the most played with toys for my boys (6 & 3) so I don't mind spending more on them. We have some sets with vehicle bases & road patterns, as well as cranes etc, which really add to their creative play.

I don't think the quality is necessarily better than cheaper brands wrt the actual square pieces, but the extra stuff that comes with the play sets is worth it imo as it adds the imaginative element. They are also very well made. My two like to build vehicles, they build zoos with the toy animals, or forest settings and conduct mountain rescues, etc 😄 So I'd say it depends on the child, but I really like the extra elements that those themed sets bring to their play!

I've got some very cheap ones, but it's worth remembering if you buy them from one of the famously cheap Chinese websites, they may not be made to the same safety standards. If your child is still at the age where they might put a stray magnet in their mouth, they at least need to be made to EU/British safety standards.

We bought well reviewed Amazon rip offs and were impressed

we got given magnatiles and found them disappointing. They were quite lame / weak in comparison to the Chinese knock offs 🤷🏻‍♀️

Interesting! Thanks everyone, will give the cheap ones a go then but look for sets with extra bits.

Our children love them. They get used in all the other games as beds/houses/tunnels/caves/barns/firestations/barbie prison/racetrack/ footpaths etc etc . Buy as many as you can afford.

We've got Connetix. Excellent quality but definitely get them when they are on offer!
