Chromebook vs laptop

We are thinking of getting our 10yo a Chromebook or laptop for Christmas. We are all Apple users but MacBooks are a bit out of our budget!

Budget is around £300. It would mainly be used for homework assignments, which are submitted via Google classroom, and creative writing.

If you have experience of either for a child I'd be interested to hear ☺️

Chromebooks are great for social media, they aren't great for homework. My DD has had two Chromebooks and both stopped working at about 18 months. I think laptops are generally a safer option in terms of longevity and also most workplaces use Word, Excel etc so it's good for the person using it to get used to these functions.
Personally, I would never buy a Chromebook again. You can get a decent laptop for under £300.

Thank you, that's what I needed to hear!

There's some Black Friday deals and laptops about £200-250 so might go down that route ☺️

Chromebooks are brilliant but people.often don't understand them. They have less internal storage than a laptop so you.need to use external storage eg the cloud, not hard to do as everything can be saved to Google docs. If you keep that in mind and don't try to store too much on them then they are great - fast and responsive and easy on the budget. I've had two and am a convert. I won't go back to a normal laptop. I find laptops overpriced and slow, and slow down and stop working within a couple years.

What's the difference between a chrome book and a laptop?

My son had a chrome book but he wished he’d got a laptop. Though I think that was for other reasons, not homework! He has a desk top now which he uses for homework but he wanted that instead of a games console. I liked the chrome book though.
