Bought Mince Pies Quality Testing

frozendaisy · 06/11/2024 14:49

Anyone any good at this?

I have some tesco finest waiting to get home and the youngster to help quality test, we are the only two permanent household members who like a mince pie so the other's opinions are irrelevant.

I definitely prefer ones with a hint of brandy/port.

So anyone else have any favourites, or just as important ones to avoid that are good year after year

Am thinking M&S will need a test run.

There were contenders in Aldi.

DS2 is onto his second box this season.
He has requested I don't buy any more Mr Kipling (too much pastry, not enough mince).
No feedback on Tescos (whatever was on offer on Saturday!) box yet - but he has had them every lunchtime this week.

Greggs and Aldi Specially Selected always win in this house.
Have resisted buying any so far this year though.

DH swears by the Waitrose No 1 ones, with brown butter. He is very well-qualified in his field and has started already

DD has fewer years experience but always wants the M and S ones, with the little star cut out of the pastry

Edited to add: I hate mince pies but am happy to join in any stollen tasting events!

Our family is with your DH. Waitrose brown butter ones are the best. They’ve got small ones this year and we already checked a few weeks ago if the quality stayed the same. I can report that it did

Good Housekeeping have already done their test.

Winners are Aldi Specially Selected All Butter Mince Pies.

But I'll probably buy a pile of one of the runners up, Iceland Luxury All Butter Mince Pies, like I normally do, as it's easier to get to Iceland than Aldi.

Aldi on the list

Top tier in the MouseHouse:
Waitrose No.1 brown butter - ultimate winner
Tesco Finest - strong runner up
Marks standard with star on - honourable mention

frozendaisy · 06/11/2024 18:14

@Chersfrozenface which ones scored low with GH?

It's all very important information

I like the Waitrose ones, my favourite is the brown butter with cognac. Their puff pastry ones are good too.

IDontLikePinaColadas · 06/11/2024 18:16

Weirdly I’ve always loved the mini ones from Bookers - at least I did when I last had a card for them which was a few years ago. Appreciate you need an account for this but if you know anyone who has one give them a go.

Toomanysquishmallows · 06/11/2024 18:16

We always get the Iceland mince pies .

Pootle40 · 06/11/2024 18:18

My favourites are the puff pastry ones which tend to be in the 'baked in store' sections

imnotthatkindofmum · 06/11/2024 18:19

My favourite mince pies are costa ones as the pastry is not just soft. Unfortunately they don't sell in packets so not good value for money.

MissSkate · 06/11/2024 18:19

Coop ones here! And a Betty's one if I'm feeling flush with the cash.

Sainsbury Bakery Shortcrust - pack of four
Or Sainsbury Taste the Difference Mini Mince Pies

Tesco ones used to be nice but not had them for years

The list was just the best and also-rans.

The best, Aldi, scored 88 out of 100, Iceland scored 80 out of 100, and the lowest scores, including Waitrose Brown Butter, were 70 out of 100.

TrickyD · 06/11/2024 18:35

I have always made my own. A big performance making a lot of pastry and producing three to four dozen.
This year I thought sod this. I used Lidl ready made shortcrust pastry and some ‘Luxury’ mincemeat which DH found in the cellar left over from last year. A good slosh of brandy plus some extra cherries because I like them. The roll of pastry made 12 pies,
They were delicious, the pastry was excellent and DH picked up two more packs so there will be plenty of labour saving mincers available.

CaptainBenson · 06/11/2024 18:41

I bought some from Lidl last year that were laced with ameretto and had slices of almond on top.

They were the most magical thing I've ever eaten. No pressure Lidl but if you're not selling them again this year then Christmas is cancelled!!!

Floralnomad · 06/11/2024 18:43

The Costco ones are the best , unfortunately I’m on a low carb diet so will be extremely limited in my intake this year .

lovemycbf · 06/11/2024 19:02

Waitrose all butter puff pastry mince pies are nice

Cherryblossom6754 · 06/11/2024 19:05

Another vote for Greggs mince pies! Crumbly, good with tea.

GettingStuffed · 06/11/2024 19:06

I like the Lidl ameretto mince tarts but they're definitely a luxury. So far this year I've had exactly 0 mince pies.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 06/11/2024 19:26

The Co op's Gluten and milk free ones are very nice. Just need to find a dairy free alternative to either squirty cream or whipped cream now

I saw dairy free whipped cream in Tesco the other night!

U13579 · 06/11/2024 19:30

I wish i liked mince pies as this is a fun thread but sadly I can't have dairy AND I hate raisins and sultanas so I'm a lost cause 😅

Matildahoney · 06/11/2024 19:32

SettlerOfDivan · 06/11/2024 16:48

The Costco ones are the size of a small plate and have frangipane/sponge top.

They also freeze well and can be eaten after 60s in the microwave.

What she said!
But shh we don't want everyone knowing about them and there being none left!

Co-op deep filled apple mince pies from their bakery section (come in a black box 2 pack)
