Board game tournament

In the weird time between Christmas and new year, when you're perpetually grazing on food and no longer know what day it is, I was thinking of holding a game board tournament type thing for the kids. The likelihood of it not raining is pretty much nill and I thought it might be a fun idea to have silly prizes and maybe some kind of daft trophy at the end.
Has anyone ever done something similar or have ideas of how it could be done?

For peace and harmony, you'd have to make sure that all the children have an equal chance of winning something.

I'm generally all for healthy competition but DS2 was hugely competitive as a child and incapable of losing gracefully (he still is but is now at least capable of losing gracefully!). It would not have been the warm, cosy fun activity you're hoping for!

@SoupDragon for the most part I think it would be OK as they are 7 and 9 and we play board games on a regular basis. That being said I think I would have to give a bit of thought to the games played to make sure it was an even playing field so to speak and make sure there's some team based games.

We have done lots of Mariokart tournaments with a trophy for the winner, not for who wins the race as such, but with points for various achievements - for board games it could be who rolls the most 6s consecutively or fastest win etc.

you can buy old trophies on eBay very cheaply, the more random the better and then just stick a new label on

I like the idea for in game achievements so to speak @ChequerboardCharlie the most 6's would be good and I never thought of ebay for trophies but I bet you can get some good ones!
