VR headsets

My 12 year old has asked for a VR headset for Christmas but I don’t know where to start.
He’s not massively into tech-has an Xbox but uses it about once a week. He still likes playing the active (Kinect?) games on an old Xbox 360 which is why I think he wants the Vr headset so he can move around.
so I don’t think he’d be disappointed if he didn’t get the most up to date one but I don’t want to get something that is really out of date.
but they are really expensive!
for reference the other things he would like are things like nerf guns so he is still quite a ‘young’ 12

And there are so many accessories! It’s blowing my mind

A meta quest 2?
You don't need lots of accessories - something to store it in (and you can buy cheaper ones from Amazon instead of the official case), and maybe a comfier head strap. But the controllers come with the headset and that's fine. There's an upgraded version but the 2 is absolutely fine. It's good fun!

Also recommend the meta quest 2. I got it for dp last year and he mainly uses it for boxing exercise, but I've had a go and it's great :) Think it's the entry level for something not a bit crap? Got it on black friday.

We got the metaquest 3 last year for DS. Only got a case and he uses powerbank to charge when playing if needed. He loves it. We bpught on very on black friday and used 20% off new customer code

sleepyscientist · 12/10/2024 14:46

We have the quest 2 think it's 2-3years old and has been played with most days. DS is getting the quest 3 for Xmas as his is now showing its age

Noodlepots · 12/10/2024 14:51

Ok thank you. Struggling to find a 2 that isn’t second hand.
Looks like there’s a 3 (v pricey) and a 3 s (less pricey) that comes out soon.
big difference in price for different amounts of storage-would the 128gb version be enough?
good to hear they are being played with and aren’t just a gimmick

Black Friday looks like a good idea.
I think he’ll be so excited!

DS has MetaQuest2...bought last Christmas. With the benefit of hindsight I'd say it's a bit of a fad...I could count on both hands the number of times I've seen him play with it.

CatsLikeBoxes · 12/10/2024 15:14

I think it's like anything - some people won't have sustained interest in it, and others will.
I think it's good fun, and there are a variety of different types of games you can play - you can use it for sport - table tennis feels very realistic - climbing, rollercoasters, story type games and my favourite: beat saber - so it has variety. Any friends or family who have tried it out have enjoyed it.

twomanyfrogsinabox · 12/10/2024 15:26

What games do they come with? How and where do you buy other games, sports, etc. They are a whole new thing to me, but look like they could be fun. Just no idea where to start.

Dawevi · 12/10/2024 15:28

DS10 is buying himself the metaquest 3, apparently that's the best one.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 12/10/2024 17:36

We have both, Metaquest 3 and 2 and I’d say it’s a bit of a fad. Played with for a bit when they first got them but now they mainly sit in their cases.

Wildbird12 · 12/10/2024 17:46

Following this thread for ideas as it is the only thing my son wants for Christmas.

yodog · 12/10/2024 17:54

my 1 and 9 year old share a quest 3, both love it. Battery life is poor though, you need to get some sort of charging head strap/ bank to charge it up longer.

TheGriffle · 12/10/2024 17:56

I’m getting Dh a Meta Quest 3S for Christmas. He’d borrowed one from his mates son and has really enjoyed playing it.

Hardlyworking · 12/10/2024 18:03

Both my boys have the meta quest 2. They use them every day and would love in them if I didn't limit the time.

They play mostly free games with their friends like Gorilla Tag and Player One. I quite like to see them on it as they get a decent workout and come off sweating through their clothes every time.

PoodleMum23 · 12/10/2024 18:05

We have the Meta Quest 2 and 3. I'd suggest the 3S if looking for something a little cheaper. You don't need to buy the extras like battery, headstrap etc but I must say, it does make it a lot more comfortable. Those things could be added a later date though. I'd recommend the Bobovr strap if they have one for the 3S.

Myself and my kid love it and each have a headset. You can get Roblox on it for free which has a nerf/paintball type game called Foam Strike. Lot of fun. Another good game is Beat Saber. Can be bought through the Meta app or on the headset itself.

Soberfutures · 12/10/2024 18:12

The 3s is the same lenses as the 2 so not really worth it in my opinion. I would go get a 2nd hand 2 and buy a new headstrap/battery pack from amazon. We got ours from CEX and was amazing quality. There are some good Facebook oculus pages for game discounts. We hardly ever pay full price.
