How easy is Backgammon to learn?

I am sure I used to be able to play it as a teenager. Am thinking of getting 12yo ds a set for christmas. He likes chess and other games. Is it easy to learn? Obv I would need to learn it too to play with him.

It is very easy to learn the basics. Very hard to become skilled.

There are tutorials on YouTube. If you look for backgammon for beginners or classic 2 player backgammon, that should set you up nicely.
