I need a kindle for a 17 year old who adores books. Google has my head fried, what is the best one to get but cheap or likely to be in a sale.

Does my daughter then need a subscription to amazon prime? Or to kindle?

I'm totally clueless so please help 🤶

Mine is the standard 6 inch screen but they don't seem to be available at the moment. The paperwhite is the one amazon are suggesting. I bet there will be a black Friday offer if you hang on.

It's worth paying £10 more when you buy it to be ad free.

She doesn't need prime but will need an amazon account to buy the kindle books from. Buy the kindle book from the Amazon website (not the app) then it delivers it to the kindle linked to the account (using wifi). When the book is on the kindle, turn off the WiFi to make the battery last longer (a few weeks). No ongoing subscriptions are needed. For my much younger daughter, I buy amazon vouchers which I add to her account so she can buy books without using a credit card. There are lots of cheap book offers for around 99p but often the books you really want are not much cheaper than the real print copy.

Get the basic one at about £89
He can buy the books he wants and doesn't need to have a subscription

Kindle unlimited is really good, £9 something a month thousands of books really popular & latest ones too!

If you go with a different e reader with some of them you can borrow library books if you are a member so that may be worth looking into . We have kindle paper whites , I find mine a bit temperamental but it’s great for reading in the dark , which is what I do . We also pay for kindle unlimited but both myself and my daughter use it .

If you have Amazon prime he can access free books but I purchase kindle unlimited and it's really worth the subscription. But it's not needed, kindle books are generally much cheaper to buy too. Hold out to Amazon prime deals come on it black Friday sales and you will get a bargain

Amazon Prime day is next week 8th & 9th, so they will def be reduced then. If you don't have Prime, maybe signup for a free trial

I bought a kindle 2022 in July, just the basic one; it's fine for my needs.

I think you do need a prime membership for one tho, to be able to download books. I chose for mine to be already linked to my account when purchasing, so made setup quick and easy. HTH

Thank you all for the advice. Il wait until black Friday. She was a book hoarder with over 300 in a teeny house so we decided a kindle would be best. She cried getting rid of them though but she kept a good 50 of her favourite ones.
