Looking for some inspiration for DD. DD has asked for a baby born but doesn't play with toys and not sure it's worth it? What are you getting your DC at this age?

Will be dgd will be 8 1/2 at Christmas.

I know what dd & sil have on their list as it's in safe storage at ours:

FountainofTruth · 22/09/2024 12:40

Oh and yoto mini and some new cards.

ShortColdandGrey · 22/09/2024 12:48

My 8 year old would like a Monster High doll. I am going to buy it soon as I have a horrible feeling they are going to be popular this year. She would also like some modelling clay and wheelies.

Forgottenmyphone · 22/09/2024 13:23

My dd is a little older than yours, but birthday or Christmas present hits over the past few years:
Lite Brite
Marvin’s Magic glow art
Lego dots
T shirt from Illuminated Apparel
Vtech secret safe diary
Labyrinth 3D
Tamagotchi
Clothes from Selfie Clothing Co
Hair wrap kit
Aquarellum

I'm struggling a bit myself, but I'm currently thinking about either a chemistry set or an Echo Dot so she can listen to music in her room.

Upsadiddles · 22/09/2024 15:17

DD7 has only asked for craft bits so far so I’ve just done a bumper Baker Ross order including paint pens. I’ve also got her some LED lights for her room, a game and stocking fillers like lip balm, slipper socks and pens. Other ideas I’ve got are a 3d pen and switch game, plus I always buy pyjamas and books.

She’s suddenly decided she’s too old for toys and is interested in clothes and makeup which I’m finding a bit heartbreaking. She does still play with her Barbie’s/LOL dolls and sylvanian families intermittently though. I’m holding out until nearer Christmas before buying anything else in case the “too old” thing is just a phase. She’s not interested in dolls anymore but I think in your shoes I’d wait until December and if she’s still asking for the baby born then I’d get it.

My DD will be 8 at Christmas, so far my ideas are:

  • a make your own bubble tea set
  • Lego Friends
  • Greg Jenner history books
  • some kind of face glitter

I'm still gathering ideas at this stage, but last year she also got:

  • pyjamas/socks/pants
  • an LOL clubhouse
  • Lego
  • books & Yoto cards

It feels like a tricky age because I don't want to push her into that tween makeup/clothes stage too early, but at the same time I don't want to buy toys if she's going to outgrow them in a few months. Watching with interest!

Nomorescreentime · 23/09/2024 10:43

My 7.5 year old has asked for a Baby Born, I’m going to get it. She won’t be 7 again!

MummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 23/09/2024 14:11

Lego Hogwarts (got it second hand, doing lego sets together is DH and her thing)

Art set from Hobbycraft

A Stitch hoodie and cozy pjs

Isadora Moon books

Barbie clothes

Going to get a board game as well, maybe Cluedo Junior.

On her wider family wish list a tamagotchi, but the appeal may last all of 5 minutes, so perhaps a fingerlings instead. Also a Stitch stationery set and backpack.

Some play make up (she had a set for her birthday but it's looking pretty smushed up these days), choc santa and rubiks cube for her stocking.

She has a load of dolls so I'm reluctant to get any more though. She got a baby Annabel a couple of years ago which occasionally gets played with. Also, we've not actually asked her yet, she may throw us a curveball!

We have a birthday and christmas next to eachother... this is my ideas lost, most suggested by her.

Maileg mouse in a matchbox (she gets one every year)
Heelys
Studio creator camera
Lego
Loom bands
Anything hello kitty
Fluffy bean bag
Bits from temu
Books
Bubble tea kit
Jewellery
National geographic Gemstone kit
Stationary
Board game
Jellycats

Wallawallakoala · 23/09/2024 14:39

My 7 year old has also asked for one and I just got her this from b&m for £15 and the doll to match was £4 which seemed like a bargain! I think she will play with it and my 2 year old will if she doesn’t!

EcoCustard · 23/09/2024 20:45

Dd8, is 9 just before Christmas ideas so far are:
Roller skates
Instax camera
Books
Sketching supplies

Dd7 ideas so far are:
Another Football kit
Football gloves
Books
Lego Creator or Car sets

Maybe an echo dot for their room as they share and love their music.

Dd8 got a fab newborn doll from Smyths with her pocket money a few weeks ago, hasn’t stopped playing with it yet, it’s great as she can bath it. She still plays with all her baby dolls, they both do. I will happily get them more baby bits as they still play with it.

Mine are grandsons and I'm getting one of them the Terry Pratchett's children's books . I'm not sure about the other one yet. I suspect it will be money to his parents to buy his Christmas and birthday presents.

DelurkingAJ · 23/09/2024 22:58

DS2 (8) has announced that Carcassone extension pack(s) are on his wish list. We have the original game. He is board game mad so it’s no surprise. Cricket kit (if needed…will consult with DH who knows what’s what there) a possibility. DS1 was still into Lego at this age, which helped.

My daughter wasn't big on toys, except for baby born, and she played with it endlessly from age 5-9. No other dolls were as loved. I'd get if if that is what she is asking for.

StuckInsideofMobile · 24/09/2024 19:45

I also think it's easy to get hung up on the question of whether a present is "good value" if it doesn't get played with for long. I'm not sure that is actually helpful. Christmas presents are as much about showing love as fulfilling a "need" of the child - many children don't really "need" anything in an objective sense. If it's not an outrageous request in the context of the family finances, maybe what matters is that she likes it when she gets it and feels happy and loved.

StuckInsideofMobile · 24/09/2024 19:47

E.g. DD doesn't really need another soft toy. But I bet she'd be delighted if I can find a fennec fox squishmallow.

ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS · 24/09/2024 20:22

My 7yo DD has so much I’m struggling with ideas, third DD so lots of things from her older sisters.

She needs a new tablet and is desperate for an iPad, but we always said Santa dosnt give tablets/iPads with our oldest 2 and if they wanted iPads they’d have to buy them themselves so can’t really get her one as we feel it’s unfair on our older children as they bought their own.

She really wants a Bridget Doll from Disney Descendants, she’s been begging to buy one with her birthday money, I’ve managed to convince her none of the shops have them at the moment as I have one hidden away.

So far I’ve got

Fluffy Mermaid tail blanket
Pixi toy
Princess funko pop
Bridget doll

Shes been admiring Our Generation dolls and playsets. We already have dolls from my older DDs but no more play-sets as we got rid of the ones we had so I may look into getting a second hand play-set as I’m worried the novelty will wear off as with all her Barbie stuff we made room for, now she very rarely plays with any of it.

Mini brands have been a big thing this year I love them as they don’t take too much room up, my dd has the shop she paid with her pocket money and got the bedroom set for her birthday and asked for mini brands off family.

Runaway1 · 25/09/2024 16:59

Mine has asked for:

Barbies
loom band charms
a magic set
ear piercing
a surprise!

I am thinking the surprise might be:
a mini pottery wheel
CD player (hers is broken)
a head torch (for camping)

Runaway1 · 25/09/2024 17:01

Oh, and I found a foldaway Barbie house secondhand which I’m not sure how much she’ll play with. For £15 I thought I would see if she likes it.

Namechange7364 · 27/09/2024 20:50

My DD will be 8 1/2 at Christmas and has always been obsessed with baby dolls.

So was considering buying her a reborn type doll, but then suddenly she has got really into playing with her barbies (has always had them and been a passing interest but now has been playing with them every single day for the past two months!).

She wrote a two-sided Christmas list a few weeks ago and pretty much every item, bar a couple of things, was a Barbie set 😁 So probably going to get the Barbie dream house 😬 She has built her barbies an elaborate school set up with magnetic tiles so going to also get her a magna tiles house set.

She also loves crafts, so as a joint present with her younger brother, am going to do the whole filled art trolley thing.
