Hi guys thanks in advance! I am looking for some cheaper dupes of LEGO. I bought my son the nightmare before Christmas LEGO set but I am looking for some cheaper boys sets, would like them to be adults sets for boys, I would like ideally 2000 pieces (or at least 1000 pieces), anyone can help me with some fairly cheap sets?

What sort of "Boys sets"? Are we talking cars? Dinosaurs? That stereotype? Or space?

CrouchingTigerHiddenChocolate · 17/09/2024 15:50

If you say what his interests are rather than suggesting that putting plastic blocks together in a particular way means its a boys activity you may get some help.

What does he like?. Some of the actual lego sets have really good deals on as well. I've just bought a load of them for Xmas.

Hi thanks totally should have re-worded it he loves a lot of Lego and he had a big Lego set for Christmas (nightmare before Christmas) and a smaller set (peely bone Fortnite) but looking for some sets on the cheaper side, doesn't have to be official Lego. His likes I've listed above, trying to stay as low as possible as already spend most of his budget for Christmas but need some more to bulk up his gifts

To be honest we've always found them awful - maybe others can recommend better ones? I would go for second hand 'official' lego, also try steering clear of the branded stuff like Minecraft and Harry Potter.

Ponderingwindow · 17/09/2024 16:34

I would just buy generic mixed pieces of actual Lego. You can even look for them used. They hold up beautifully and are actually easy to clean.

The quality of the knockoffs is so much worse that it’s better to just build a collection slowly.

ThisPresetIsSelected · 17/09/2024 16:35

Have to agree that non-Lego dupes tend to be a bit crap, don't click together as well and my boys end up losing interest. Can you look for second-hand sets?

The 3-in-1s are good even if a bit pricier as can make 3 models at least.

BeerForMyHorses · 17/09/2024 16:38

I don't think any company has ever managed to replicate Lego. They are expensive but that's because they are good. Instructions are clear, never any missing pieces

Needmorelego · 17/09/2024 16:39

There's loads of alternative brands online.
Just please don't buy ones that are clearly copies of official Lego sets but with the names slightly changed (ie "Space Wars" instead of Star Wars or "Wizard School" instead of Harry Potter) because these are stolen designs.
But there is absolutely loads of legit compatible brands. If you avoid the temu type sites the quality is usually good.
If you want to buy from a shop rather than online the B+M own brand (Brick by Brick) has technic style cars.
Smyths have started their own brand called Brick It.

My post was hidden. Not sure why so just trying again.

Needmorelego · 17/09/2024 16:42

Ok....not sure why my post was hidden.
Basically I was saying that retailers like B+M that do their own compatible brands are usually pretty good.

Oh....my first post has appeared now 😂

Cobi do good lego style model things, usually aircraft and tank type things, i found it trickier than lego to follow but good quality

ChristmasMad1 · 17/09/2024 16:48

Okay thank you all I will keep an eye out on B&M for some pieces trying to stick to sets and not random bricks as he normally build the 18+ sets it's just trying to find the 1000 pieces sets for cheap

@ChristmasMad1 there's a site called "Brick - a - brac - uk" that sells discounted Lego sets. Some are discontinued sets , some are damaged boxes so they are cheaper.

SocksShmocks · 17/09/2024 16:57

Honestly the Lego ‘compatible’ kits we’ve had have been rubbish. Instructions hard to follow and pieces low quality.

Id rather have a smaller number of proper Lego kits than more of the ‘dupes’.

Lego that isn’t ‘branded’ (Harry Potter, Star Wars, etc) is cheaper because they don’t have to pay for the licensing - so the Lego City kits for example.
