Pretty villages at Christmas

Looking for recommendations of pretty decorated villages at Christmas, preferably in the North of England or Scottish Borders please!

Bonus points for Christmas tree festivals, markets and churches with Christmas Carols. Trying to save money this year and not splurge on light trails etc.

Ambleside keeps coming up in internet searches but pretty sure I've been at Christmas and can't remember many lights. Thank you!

Not in the right area geographically but Chatsworth is spectacular at Christmas.

ChickenandaCanofCoke · 02/09/2024 22:07

Thank you. I'll add it to the list

Castleton in the Peaks if you go to Chatsworth. Carols in a cave called The Devil's Arse 😊🤣

Fabulous 🤣

Haughton - near Stafford, (Staffordshire.)

Large village that has an epic Christmas light display every December. 🎄😄

Most definitely!

Chatsworth is expensive though. OP looking to save money on light trails.

Haworth (Brontë country) does a Christmas twilight procession in early Dec with carols. But a wander down the main street anytime in Dec is lovely and festive

ChickenandaCanofCoke · 02/09/2024 23:28

Love those pics. Added to the list.

Yes, Chatsworth is the type of thing I'm trying to avoid. Fabulous but I'm convinced we can have as much fun without splurging.

I'll pack a flask of hot chocolate and mince pies to take with us!

Oh absolutely! Smile I live within 25 miles of it, so not too far to visit. The switch-on is usually 5th-8th December through to 1st January.

Normally they all switch on their displays and lights at 6pm. (Then off at 9.30pm I think.) They don't keep them on too long ... Imagine the electric bill if they had them on every day from 4pm to midnight or something?!! 😱

Not a real village but Beamish? North East
