What are your children getting?!

I live low waste and my children don't need anything so I'm struggling! Toddler and teen. They'll both get handmade clothes (that's what I do, they'll be nice I promise!) And a couple of books. But then I'm stuck! I don't buy plastic, my toddler has open ended toys so maybe a larger toy or dollhouse? My teen wants v bucks but I don't want him to have nothing to really open, he loves being outdoors, loves sticks and stone, aspires to be a geologist so maybe a rock tumbler? Urgh I'm at a loss. How do you find a balance between too much and not enough?!

I think you’ll struggle finding a rock tumbler that isn’t plastic, I haven’t seen any. Same with the magnetic tiles, they’re covered in plastic.

I was thinking tegu for the magnets and havent researched rock tumblers yet.

@itsalrightdarling both are disabled, toddler can't say a single word and has just started walking but can't use a ride on or do much that others her age are doing. My teen is severely autistic and has communication difficulties and would say he wants everything he sees, I go into any shop and whatever he sees he wants and if he gets it its just put down and never seen again 😆

I don't go all out ar Christmas and avoid plastic. Mine are 6 and 4.
Spread between the two of them:
Wooden dinosaurs
Playdough
Dress up costumes
Nice colouring book each
Some books.

Toys and dress up are sourced from vinted. There will be a few more bits I'm sure but that's the general plan.

Vinted is a treasure trove isn't it! Most of our clothes are handmade buy I love looking on vinted for wooden toys and books!

I took my Xmas tree to the charity shop yesterday. Xmas is officially banned and I am so relieved. No more forced cheerfulness, Xmas tat, over indulgence and build up stress.

Instead, a trip to the stones to welcome back the sun, with stories and singing round a cheerful fire and nice food with good people.

This might not be the board for you 😂

I've stumbled across this thread and feel like I'm in a parallel universe. Thank you though - I will bookmark it and return around 20 December when I start panic-buying.

I'm hoping if I buy one or two things a month I won't have to juggle finances to panic buy in December 😁

I've already bought a Meileg Mouse following inspiration from this thread.

Something I'm looking at is a tea set that fits in a little kiddie wicker basket. I have already picked up a really good brio trainset for free. DD will be 3 at Christmas.

My DD birthday is 13/12 so I'm using this thread to get ideas for both🤣

If you're struggling for physical things why not get something like a weekend trip somewhere they really want to go or a season ticket to an attraction?

HorizontalNotVertical · 07/08/2024 12:35

I’ve been waiting impatiently for my niece to be old enough for a Maileg mouse. Think this year might be the one 😁

On my list for teen DD so far-
— big blue cashmere scarf
-some sort of hoops tbc
-small black crossbody bag
-trainers of her choice
-perfume tbc
-art materials
-art books

For granddaughter (8) we've bought theatre tickets ( The lion the witch and the wardrobe) and plan on getting her a Mathmos neo lava lamp (it's a child safe, shatterproof one that doesn't get hot to touch)
For adult daughter and son in law theater tickets for Only fools and horses and Ghost stories and a Mathmos lava lamp.

Experience for teenager.

Is there any wildlife or zoos that have memberships, animal feeding experiences? At a local small wildlife zoo last week they had fun feeding experiences and talks. There were also lots of animal adoption gifts.

you can box up clues to go with the tickets to have something to open.

Something I’m getting my dd is a wildlife tracking bracelet for her favourite animal, she will be able to track the animal on an app. WWF and Ocean Life do them.

I agree that it might be a bit early because their wishes and tastes could change, but if there are any artists or characters they like you can make picture calendars with their images.
Also items like DIY kits or science kits have always been hits with my nephews, so maybe think in that direction, too.
