Twixmas break

I’ve got a thread in UK Travel but I’d get told off for calling it Twixmas and I’m after a variety of ideas.

Where's a good place for a Twixmas break for me, DH and DS who will be 11?

DH doesn’t like city breaks. It needs to have some active stuff and be in England.

We've done both London and Edinburgh in the past and enjoyed them, found lots to do. Aware both are city breaks, though. We enjoyed both Chester and Aviemore, though have done neither at Christmas.

Somewhere in the Peak District walking? Lots of lovely villages, plus Chatsworth House, Hardwick Hall, Eyam, the plague village. They all have wonderful grounds, lots to see and plenty of lovely pubs and tea rooms. There's also Castleton and the Peak Caverns.

I agree with this. You don’t want to head to the coast as it could be bitter and bleak - The peaks could be nice, there is Hardwick Hall too if you like history and Buxton and Bakewell are nice towns. although honestly I might re-think how I felt about city breaks given the time of year and head for Oxford or York.
