A throwback from my childhood Christmases, always a corner of the living room with treats but normally under strict instructions not to be touched until Christmas Eve or else we'd end up eating them all. So we've got those pretzel cracker things that come in little plastic compartments, Lebkuchen, Quality Street, liquorice all sorts, jelly babies, mint and orange matchmakers, toffifee, Pringles and After Eight mints. If it were 1992 and my Mum was still alive, we'd also have rum balls, orange and lemon slices and that toffee you could only break with a hammer...

Nothing wrong with a bit of restraint and anticipation!

I haven't got a display, but I've been buying treaty things for a while and putting them by. Everyone here is able to understand waiting for nice things. I much prefer that to just eating them whenever and replacing them. Xmas Grin

I've got posh crisps, some Lakrids liquorice, Quality Street, one of those Quality Street crackers with just coffee creams in (that is exclusively mine!), biscuit selection, cracker selection, and some posh Neuhaus chocolates. Going to hit Aldi today and see what delights they have.

Holy shit! Where did you find a cracker with just coffee creams in it???

They're my absolute fave! They were available from Waitrose and John Lewis but seem to be OOS now, sadly!

We had the inlaws here last weekend so some things have been opened (or finished/replaced) already. A tub of Quality Street didn't last long among 8 people with the 6 year old sharing them out every time he wanted one (suspect he was taking 2 for everyone else's 1 though!).

Mince pies
stollen bites
cookies
celebrations

that’s about it but just two of us and it’s about our fourth pack of mince pies

Thanks for this thread! I have just realised that my squirrelling away treats for Xmas, (absolutely NOT to be touched before Xmas Eve), does date from my childhood. Money was very tight, but my DM always collected lovely goodies that were only possible for us to have at Xmas.

I never realised that was why I do it, too! For me it is part of the excitement of Xmas and it would never occur to me not to do it.

It’s not on display, (because it would all be eaten by DH who has no concept of not eating everything, all at once. He has already found the mince pies and eaten them, so I rest my case!)

I have only just discovered the delights of Lidl, so I have bought some lebkuchen and pretzels and chocolate balls, (made the mistake of eating one net of these already and now they are out of stock🥲).

I also have a large tin of chocolates but will be adding some mince pies and dates.

I had forgotten that orange and lemon slices existed - they were a staple of childhood Christmases, (together with sugared almonds and bags of nuts, that sadly we can’t have as oldest adult DS has a nut allergy.) I must try to find some of the oranges and lemons in Iceland this weekend.

Ahh remember with such fondness my parents 'treas trolley'! It was actually on wheels so could be wheeled out of the corner of the living room at will!

I've already started on the pringles and Christmas gin 🧑‍🎄

Been ill all week and still feeling rubbish so trying to find some nostalgic festive cheer!

Has anyone managed to find Newbury Fruit sweets in the supermarkets btw? Haven't seen them and they were always a 1980's favourite!

I love squirrelling it away. Makes it special when it's all available. It's usually opened up Christmas Eve but might be Saturday night this year, which is usually wine and crisps anyway so not so different.

Every New Year, I think I shouldn't have bought as much but I'm now feeling twitchy. Need to stack up on crisps (Inc Pringles, cheese balls etc) and nuts. It's the savoury stuff I love.

InTheCludgie · 21/12/2023 19:00

Our treat stash now consists of:

Some share bags of crisps
Lebkuchen
Toffee popcorn
Rum balls
Xmas themed cakes

Already eaten two packs of rum balls, a big bag of lebkuchen, Matchmakers and a share bag of crisps (over a couple of weeks, not in one go!). We'll eat most of the stash when watching the Xmas eve movie but I might get more things tomorrow...

What were your favourite things this year?

Mine was big toblerone, bought DH one and one between me and DS as we always end up pinching DH's.

Heavenly dunked in hot tea. Along with a Christmas book (I don't dunk that in the tea as the ink tends to run).

The M&S shortbread. It's the best every year. They obviously sell shortbread all year around but none are as nice as the tins they do at Christmas for some reason!

Finished the stollen from Lidl today, I love it.

crochetmonkey74 · 01/01/2024 20:56

Stollen bites and mini mince pies were lovely and sainsburys pannetone

Alltheyearround · 02/01/2024 13:21

I tested various mulled wine in the run up. Morrisons was the best, loved their gingerbread version.
