How much do you spend on stockings ? Do you buy for adult children and their partners or just for children? I’m coming apart at the seams trying to do them . I don’t usually do stockings but have decided to this year.

I do them for whichever child is at home for Christmas even the 25 year old. Never bought a partner for Christmas but I’d probably do one , it’s only ever fun bits and socks and smellys for the older ones x

DustyLee123 · 18/12/2023 21:43

Just for my kids, and only those who are sleeping here on Xmas eve.

Realfastfoodie · 18/12/2023 21:45

Everyone gets them in my house, from 0-80+

Smellies
Special chocolate / biscuits
Sweets - favourites from childhood ideally
socks - sillier the better
Makeup
Nice/fun post-it notes
other stationary eg notebooks
silly/christmas pens
Christmas decoration
Book
Magazine / annual

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 18/12/2023 21:50

Everyone staying in this house on 🎄Eve gets a stocking, but it’s only for little, relatively inexpensive things. For adult non-family guests I’ve been known to use half of a nice new pair of socks as the stocking, stuff the other inside, plus a few more bits, satsuma, a bar of chocolate, lip balm, etc.

Chouxpastryishard · 18/12/2023 22:27

I find its either spend an absolute fortune on tat which they won't look at twice , even small fun things add up, or genuinely just put chocolate and socks and things in , in which case it's no fun. I just find it so stressful.

So don’t do it @Chouxpastryishard ? Or do it Secret Santa style? In our house everyone contributes apart from kids…

Mindovermatter247 · 18/12/2023 22:44

2 dc… each year is different.. DS is 15, so it’s hard to buy cheap stuff for him. Dd11 is fairly easy to buy for, I usually do one chocolate, bath bombs and then a collection of other things. They both have exactly the same amount and it comes out of my budget for each of them.

Wanttobeok · 18/12/2023 22:45

Stocking in our house is all presents from parents - stocking is big to be fair.

Not everything fits in it but it saves the problem of just buying crap because it fits I'm a small space

If something doesn't fit it goes under the stocking (so a few boxes around the bottom of fireplace)

For us it's just a parent to child thing.

So parents/siblings etc don't get a stocking from us

Needhelpsupport · 18/12/2023 22:50

I stopped stocking for my three adult children. Too expensive once including decent underwear, toiletries, socks ,games etc . Added on at least £50 per child.
Feel sad but you need to stop sometime!

macaronicheezepleeze · 18/12/2023 22:50

Husband and I just fill each other's stockings with nice little bits and bobs that show we've thought about each other.

This year his will have a bag of his favourite coffee beans, some marzipan, chocolate coins, a satsuma, a tshirt of a favourite band, and a little figurine from a computer game he plays. Last year there was a jar of fancy honey, tub of nuts, coffee, new razor and blades. That sort of thing.

My 2 year old son will have some play figurines from a tv show he likes, a few chocolate coins, a little plastic snow globe and a teddy bear.

I absolutely love doing stockings. I have such nice memories of opening and unwrapping everything in mine on Christmas morning. Unlike my mother, however, I don't wrap stocking presents

pizzaHeart · 18/12/2023 22:55

I wouldn’t do it in your place.
Are there any particular reasons to do them this year?
How many people do you have in the house?

Chouxpastryishard · 18/12/2023 22:58

We’ve agreed to do secret Santa but that means only one present per person. I just feel they need something extra. Also one of them particularly enjoys stockings and we have a partner this year too. Six people plus toddler . The toddler will be getting one obviously. Me and OH have never done them for each other. So it’s me buying for everyone else basically .

I’m suggesting you secret Santa the stockings too! Then everyone just has to do one (apart from the toddlers which is the fun one!)

flowerchild2000 · 18/12/2023 23:04

You can do small items that cost a lot or inexpensive things like chocolate and fruit. I believe fruit is the traditional thing but I throw in anything that's small and not too heavy. Mostly sweets and toys for the littlest. Adults should share the fun IMO. It normally is not a costly thing at all.

This is a good idea. Don't take on too much or it stops being fun

shellyleppard · 18/12/2023 23:06

Two teenage sons. Silly little bits like chocolate sprouts from me. Also presents they have brought each other. Pokemon cards for youngest and cards against humanity booster pack for the eldest.

pizzaHeart · 18/12/2023 23:08

for adults : chocolate coins, satsuma, protein bar, socks, novelty body sponge, small pocket game/torch/ key ring, something from travel toiletries, small notebook.
Home bargains is good and cheap Flying tiger is good but more expensive.
Tesco has a lot of little things in the corner near the car accessories.

pizzaHeart · 18/12/2023 23:12

Also Primark had small make up/ wash bags with initials.

Dasy2k1 · 21/12/2023 18:10

Stockings here are only for kids still young enough to believe in santa. And they generally contain a large amount of cheap presents
The total value of each stocking is probably around £20-25 maybe a tad more but generally contains the sort of small toys you find at the works, a colouring book and pencils. A bag of chocolate coins, that sort of stuff really.
