Jamie's gravy - star anise or no?

Don't use the star anise! It's so strong in flavour, I had to rush to Tesco to get more chicken wings and start again from scratch.

It has no place in gravy

Try red current jelly instead

Agree. I'd avoid adding both star anise and/or cloves to any gravy

I include it and don’t find it too strong, and I’m quite sensitive to star anise.

I’m planning on making this tomorrow and will be leaving it out for sure!

I mentioned on another thread that I liked it, but won't include it because when I have it caused such division that it ruined dinner anyway. Some people really hate it, and it does not add enough, and it's omission doesn't detract at all, to justify the risk of just one guest hating it.

So - no star anise .

I didn't like it but I do use a whole fennel bulb in the veg roasting mix instead which goes well.

I’ve made Jamie’s get ahead gravy for years. Only once did I add the star anise, it ruined it for me. Left it out ever since.

Star anise is lovely in some Chinese dishes but it has no place in gravy - wtf was he thinking?

Unlike many on here I really rate Jamie, I love his recipes, his programmes, I follow a lot of his tips and tricks, but he lost me on this one.

DH always puts it in gravy and it's delicious.

Perhaps put it in for a bit then whip it out.it can dominate if too strong but add another dimension if used sparingly.

Jamie needs stopping. His make ahead gravy was shit and tasteless and I am genuinely a decent cook.

His recipes are always watery and lacking in flavour.

I like star anise. I eat a lot of Chinese and Vietnamese food so use it regularly. I wouldn't dare put it in a gravy. I'd probably like it but it's too powerful and divisive. I think if I was adding a spice to gravy I'd
use allspice or mace but I'm lazy and my secret ingredient is Maggi liquid seasoning. It gives a lovely savoury flavour that people can't figure out but love.

But also, no to Jamie's gravy. It's a lot of effort for frankly disappointing results.

Def no amd no cloves unless you want people to poor it on thinking lovely then their Xmas Dinner will be inedible.

Made mine yesterday but only used one rather than two star anise and it tasted fine.

This too, his recipes are shit.
Look up whatever gravy Rick Stein does instead, his recipes are amazing.
