Ideas for elderly MIL

MIL is 93. She does really well - lives independently.

I am stumped for Christmas presents this year. I’ve bought her a lot of knitwear in the past and feel like she could open a jumper shop 😳

She has a heated throw. I got her a book subscription last year cos she likes reading but I don’t think they really got her taste.

I would love some ideas. Thank you!

Nice thick dressing gown?
Hamper of nice food?

Fartooold · 03/12/2023 17:08

Photobook?
My ancient MiL is only interested in the great grand daughter (exaggeration, but not much of one), and loves her photobooks I make every year of Dggd throughout the year.
I team it with a gorgeous new bone china mug, a throw, a new pair of slippers or PJS.
It's so hard buying for adults - even worse when said adults no longer have any 'interests 🤔

Afternoon Tea

Pashmina or silk scarf

Favourite chocolate and a good book

Flameless candles

Handbag organiser

Manicure

DM, who is slightly younger enjoyed a gin and glass set, along with a box of chocolates and a good book.

Slippers, but really nice ones (with a back)

I got my dad an electric heat pad which is about the size of a hot water bottle. I have one myself too as well as a heated throw and tend to use the heat pad more often. It’s easier to take around the house as it’s smaller. Can’t remember which brand mine is but I got one that is okay if you bend or sit on it, some of them are more temperamental. My dad loves his iPad

Toiletries and small hamper treat type food depending on where she is spending Christmas

Baaaaaa · 03/12/2023 17:22

I second the heat pad and the lava lamp ideas.

My grandma loved her glitter lava lamp. I inherited it and love it too. Provides moos.lighting and is mesmerising to look at

Audio books?
Cashmere stole?. Loop type so not a trip risk.
Rainbow maker and sticky hook for a sunny window?

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 03/12/2023 20:08

Or how about tickets to the local theatre for both of you?

redfacebigdisgrace · 03/12/2023 20:11

Would she like to have her nails painted? We did this for my elderly neighbour. Got a really lovely manicurist in who did her nails for her at home.

I have recently bought a self-warming mattress topper. It's pretty fab and there is no worry about it being on when your asleep.

If she has all the things she wants and needs would she like to see a show, have a special meal out etc?

Flower delivery subscription

PermanentTemporary · 03/12/2023 20:16

Might be a bit late but I buy hyacinth bulbs in a planter. I love the way they smell so delicious when they flower.

TeeBee · 03/12/2023 20:18

What about one of those digital photo frames that everyone can email photos to? Then she can keep up with what everyone is doing.

TeeBee · 03/12/2023 22:42

...Skylight frames!

Perfectlystill · 03/12/2023 22:44

Cashmere socks
Hand cream
Google mini so she can eg ask it the time of the weather etc

Broodywuz · 03/12/2023 22:54

A food hamper, nice biscuits, jam, chutney etc. Things that are a bit nicer than her weekly shop but she'll use. A photo puzzle? My gran loves puzzles etc and was absolutley delighted with one which was a photo of all her grandchildren

Frankley · 03/12/2023 23:24

I have seen Lego flower bunches on Amazon. I would be quite pleased if someone got me some for a present.

caringcarer · 04/12/2023 00:32

Heated slippers you plug in to warm them up. I've seen them on Living Social site.
