Vegan substitute for Turkey

Hello 👋🏼

I am hosting this year & half of the family are vegan, I've had a look online at the no meat roasts but they all seem to have either no reviews or mixed reviews. Does anyone have any suggestions on a god substitute please?

I would go with sone kind of nut roast like is one which I serve to all including meat eaters generally with requests for the recipe

www.dailybread.co.uk/recipes/recipe/chestnut-sweet-potato-loaf

  • you would need to bind with something like a chia seed in water mix rather than egg ( it's usually veggies we have not vegans )

I use quite a sweet gravy ( spoonful of recurrent jelly if you can get a vegan one )

Why can't people read the thread, it's not even long. Her guests want a meat substitute! OP the "this isn't chicken" thing upthread is really really good. Everything that company makes is good. I'd steer clear of quorn as some is vegan and some isn't.

I'd stay away from substitutes.

I think there are some great main dishes like tartletts, patties made from couscous or fancy style mushrooms that go perfectly fine with rostered vegetables...

As a vegetarian please don't serve a couscous pattie or mushrooms on the side of a roast dinner.

We’ve got some of the this isn’t roasts in our freezer (as posted upthread) and ordered some of the Sainsbury’s ones. I like vbites so will order some of those. Going to make pigs in blankets with Richmond vegan sausages and this isn’t streaky bacon. Always nice to have a nut roast too but I haven’t decided which one yet. Just watch for putting butter etc on vegetables. Sounds like you’re a great host trying to get your guests what they want!

I do a mushroom wellington with pre bought flaky pastry. But the thing that gets repeat votes is vegetarian stuffing. Breadcrumbs butter ( or vegan butter) onion carrots garlic some sugar fresh parsley all grated or crumbled and roasted in its own dish. Even the meat eaters dive on it.

Thank you all very much for your responses, I will take a look this evening & confirm again that they want a meat substitute as I have been given some lovely recipe advice on here that may sway them, if not I think I'll go for the 'this isn't' as a few people have mentioned that.

@FadedRed 😂 good idea, won't be easy to mess that up!

I personally don't really like substitutes. I stopped eating meat due to not liking the taste and texture. So I gave a nut roast. I make my own sometimes but they are hard to get right. I also will get a supermarket one and add dried fruit and extra toasted nuts.

MockneyReject · 28/11/2023 20:04

I tried the 'This Isn't' last week. It's the best substitute I've ever tried.
The Wellington, above, sounds good, though.
I do like Nut Roast, though. It's an oldie, but goodie.

zurala · 28/11/2023 20:14

I haven't tried the This Is roast but everything I've had by them had been excellent so it's worth a try. I highly recommend the Juicy Marbles steaks from Waitrose, they are amazing and they are going to be my Christmas lunch.

Avoid Tofurky, we thought it was horrible though I know some people like it.

My DH always makes a lentil loaf. He is vegetarian. He eats the vegetables cooked on the hob and mashed potatoes with it.

ReginaPhalange12 · 28/11/2023 23:37

Thank you again everyone. I've spoken to them & I'm going with 'this isn't'. I've also added the bacon & some vegan sausages to my list so I can make 'pigs' in blankets

I do roast Seitan - bloody yummy and so easy and quick to make. Just check no one is GF though as it has enough gluten in it to ruin their entire Xmas!

WeirdPookah · 29/11/2023 10:20

An extra that is really nice, is the Lidl Vegan Sausage Wreath, it's really nice, looks pretty, easy to serve a slice as an extra to the not-turkey.

Sturnidae · 29/11/2023 10:25

Make something that can be had with a roast. I make myself a squash and mushroom wellington, it's amazing and I love it, but I'm sure they'll have ideas. We also make a cashew nut roast. Tbh I love all the trimmings so I'd be happy with just the veg and sides, but it's nice to be thought of!

matthancockscareer · 30/11/2023 12:55

@Cookerhood that's the vegan richmond bit!

PinkTonic · 30/11/2023 13:02

I made a lovely nut and veg roast in a ring shaped tin a couple of years ago, and did all the usual trimmings but vegan. Oat milk makes excellent bread sauce! I followed up with a vegan pavlova which worked really well too.
