Nintendo switch help!

Please help as I'm going out of my mind here....

My 7 year old and 9 year old both want a switch, I'm going to get one each so they don't fight (there will be fighting as they have a little brother who isn't getting one) and can travel with them (or hopefully retreat to their bedrooms for a bit and give me some peace). I'd like them to play jointly and I'd like to play with them too.

So, do I get the regular dual controller one? Or upgrade to the OLED version as only a bit more and it's all so expensive anyway.

Do I get cartridges or the digital download? I've tried to do some research but can't seem to arrive at a decision. If you have digital download, can you download it on to more than one? What about the memory - I gather I have to get another SD card or something. Argh!!

Accessories? I thought about the driving wheels and a case (and the insurance).

Has anyone seen any deals - I feel like I'm boggle eyed for looking! They want Mario Party, Mario Cart, Animal Crossing and Harry Potter (or Hogwarts).

I know it's a huge present each and I've been holding off but feeling the pressure now - 1 month to Christmas Day and hopefully Black Friday deals!

Feeling like a crazy hopping person today (plus too much caffeine!)

Get the OLED if you can, only because better screen. Animal crossing is great, Mario cart great, party not so much.
Pic min is a lovely gentle game
Get cartridges not downloads re space
Don't need all the accessories but case is important.

Blessedbethefruitz · 25/11/2023 12:17

If you've not used very before, you can open a credit account for 20% off. I did this last year and paid in full at checkout. Get cartridges, you can resell them if they ever want to. Minecraft is a good one that doesn't cause whining/tantrums in Creator mode!

We have driving wheels and spare handsets.

SylvanianFrenemies · 25/11/2023 12:39

Get cartridges. More flexibility and they can be sold/swapped. You can only download to a single account.
If they want to play together they will need one cartridge (or download) each 😩 (Unless it is a multiplayer game like mariokart that you can hook up a single console to the tv). You cannot hook up switch lite to the tv.
There are cheaper download only games that are good for 2 player, eg Among Us.

Mumof1andacat · 25/11/2023 12:40

Definitely the oled version and always game cartridges. Look up your local CEX game shop. They also sell online.

SylvanianFrenemies · 25/11/2023 12:42

Ps you won't need a memory card straightaway, but likely to want them at some point. You need a micro sd card that suitable for gaming. Suggest minimum 256gb.

DGPP · 25/11/2023 12:45

Definitely cartridges but make sure you keep track of them - we’ve lost a few!
it’s a big investment but all ours is still going strong several years later. It’s much loved

DGPP · 25/11/2023 12:45

And second that you will need a bigger memory card at some point

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 25/11/2023 12:51

I saw a TV advert earlier for a black Friday deal at Smyth's Toy Superstore for a switch bundle, might be worth checking?

Piccalino3 · 25/11/2023 12:57

Now this is what I needed - THANK YOU! Was feeling like my head was going to explode and this has been on my radar for months!

Ok, OLED, cartridges, check out Very and Smyths and think about a card later.

You may have restored my sanity!

I posted on here a couple of years ago. I was told to buy from tesco as they do best return for any problems. This had proved correct. I'd definitely do that again

monpetitlapin · 25/11/2023 13:06

The steering wheels are great for Mario Kart, not much use for anything else though. We do MarioKart a lot so it was a good purchase for us.

Piccalino3 · 25/11/2023 14:02

Ok, so how do I know if the games are digital downloads or cartridges? Is it the cost? Most places don't seem to say whether it's a cartridge or digital. I'm looking at Very:

www.very.co.uk/nintendo-switch-minecraft/1600280822.prd?Ntt=nintendo%20switch%20games

Presume this is digital as it's £19.99

This one must be cartridge?

www.very.co.uk/nintendo-hogwarts-legacy/1600849431.prd?Ntt=nintendo%20switch%20games

Why is this so hard?!

Get a case for when the console is hand held in case they drop it and a carry case for transporting.

NameChange30 · 25/11/2023 14:37

I ordered a Switch, games and wheels from Very yesterday - signed up for a credit account and got 20% off (which is on top of the Black Friday deals) so it was an excellent price.

i didn't bother with the OLED version, just got the standard one. There is bundle with Mario Wonder for £259: https://www.very.co.uk/nintendo-switch-neon-console-amp-super-mario-bros-wonder/1600942949.prd
And another bundle with Sports for £259:
https://www.very.co.uk/nintendo-switch-console-with-free-switch-sports-set-3-months-online-membership/1600938874.prd

Then you will need to buy the games they want separately. I got Mario Kart and Super Mario Party (£40 reduced to £32 with the discount).

No Minecraft is just cheaper, that's the physical game not the digital download.

slipperypenguin · 25/11/2023 14:43

Honestly in our experience:-

  1. Definitely cartridge
  2. Buy a cheap sd card online from Amazon
  3. Steering wheel just get the small ones not a big Mario kart one
  4. If your planning to use them for travelling definitely get a protection case - they drop all the time and the controllers can get messed

Do you need a steering wheel to play Mario Kart?

Piccalino3 · 25/11/2023 15:25

Ok great! I'm going to order from Very I think and sign up for a credit account which I pay off straight away! Games are cartridges - fab.

Now, Mario - when I use to play there was a main one - Mario world or something. Now there's tons. Which do I get?!

No! It just makes it a bit more fun.

Mario Wonder released last month and is the newest 2d platformer. It's great fun.

mmgirish · 25/11/2023 17:35

@MoralOrLegal Thanks!

@Piccalino3 Great thread - it has really helped me too!

Piccalino3 · 25/11/2023 17:44

Well I bought it, somehow I messed up the Very 20% off, no idea how. Was a bit confused, kids nagging me and I did buy now pay later - expecting to see the total amount and it went through, I think at full price. Doh! Can't call till Monday and can't cancel the items.

How did I manage that? Anyway, have them ordered and on the Black Friday deal so even if I don't get 20% off it was still a decent deal.

Thanks everyone for brilliant advice!

You have to sign up for a credit account and then use the code WELCOME

MoralOrLegal · 25/11/2023 18:07

Up to four people can play Mario Kart at once on your TV. Which is hilarious. I assume that you could hook up one Switch to the telly, and use your existing four controllers (two that come with each console)!
