Do you like Christmas cards ?

We have some elderly relatives / neighbours and friends & family that don't live close by and won't be seeing them for Christmas.I

We send those people cards and I guess it's nice to receive back but if I'm being honest I hate having to find space for cards that we are given and expected to reciprocate .
I'm also in a group ( hobby about 10 people ) and we give each other cards. I

We even have someone in our street ( hello Jeff & Mary ) that post one through our door and as well as their name put @ No 9 , so we send one to them as well ,
I wouldn't know them if I walked past them !

So would we be a grinch if we culled down our Christmas card list ?

I'm still receiving & therefore sending cards to people I worked with 10 years ago and never seen since !

If you don't like card 'up' pop them in a nice wicker tray or something. Simple.

I read them and then bin them immediately which really riled up some people on an earlier thread about birthday cards.

The sentiment is lovely and I appreciate them but I don't want them hanging around all December never to be read again.

I don't send them.

Same.

You'd end a friendship if someone said they'd rather not receive a card?! 🤣

Probably for the best, then... cards are mostly pointless. Especially if it's the only contact all year.

DustyMaiden · 21/11/2023 16:04

I’m not keen on having them up around the house and breath a sigh of relief when they come down. I do like being thought of and appreciate the sentiments in them . I’ve had some really lovely ones.

PinkBuffalo · 21/11/2023 16:06

I do no send cards and try to let peoples know I do no want any either

I might seem ungrateful, but sitting in a house by my own with someone that will send me a card but not actually spend any part of xmas with me when I am so lonely over this time does no helps me

I give all my friends little presents 🎁 instead of cards

CotswoldGal · 21/11/2023 16:21

I bought 6 Christmas stamps today for the people that I know would be upset if I didn’t send one 🎄

I really wouldn’t mind not receiving any but appreciate some people love getting them.

JstBlzd · 21/11/2023 16:34

They are nice to look at but not 'important' to me if that makes sense...like my MIL will have a running list in her head on who she sends cards to, or who is supposed to send her cards, resulting in upset if this doesn't happen - which is kind of nuts to me!

I'm not English though, and I've learned over the years that cards are very important to some folks here! So I do try to send and reciprocate.

purser25 · 21/11/2023 16:42

I love them we hang them in loops from the picture rail. My Mum always grumbles when they come down. I have cut down a few each year though. Then in January I make gift tags from them. Have started doing this with birthday cards.

caringcarer · 21/11/2023 16:58

One of my favourite Xmas tasks is writing out my Xmas cards. I put a string up on my wall and put any I receive up there.

I send cards to anyone I care a lot about but, due to distance, won't have seen during December. My list this year is 12 people/households long and I would be pleased to get cards back from any of them.

In 2024, I am going to really try to cut down on general food waste, eat less meat and cut back on general consumer spending. I think that these will all have a much bigger environmental impact than stopping my 12 cards.

Any cards I get look rather jolly on the mantlepiece - but they do go straight into the recycling bin on Jan 1st.

I let my DGC cut them up to make gift cards for the next year. I save them for them. They get out the glue and glitter and have a great time doing it.

MooseBreath · 21/11/2023 21:53

I love the ones from people who genuinely want to send well-wishes. The ones with messages written out and sometimes including a letter or family photo. A family friend has sent them for 25+ years and they are always hand-drawn portraits of her children and dogs in a nativity scene (she is very talented). I send them to people I love and think about often, and they are handmade. I don't particularly appreciate the ones where someone has hastily signed their name and just whacked it in the post.

SkaneTos · 21/11/2023 22:27

I love Christmas cards!
I send 25, and I receive around 15 (some of the people I send to are elderly and can't reciprocate).

Carsarelife · 21/11/2023 22:37

I really like them. It's part of the Christmas decorations. I like looking at all the different designs on the wall and think what a wonderful array of cards. Bonus points if they have animals on.

jocktamsonsbairn · 21/11/2023 23:27

I absolutely love Christmas cards and love hanging them up etc. all party of Christmas but... now I can't afford the postage so I've stopped doing them. I only send to elderly relatives and close family. Sad times.

sialky · 21/11/2023 23:36

I've never had friendships where people exchange cards really. Often I don't even know their address (stay in touch on FB/WhatsApp only). We started sending some to DH's relatives (to reciprocate as they sent some to us) but last year I tried to print the postage and they got returned. It's a faff having to make a trip to the post office (they are abroad so can't just use a first class stamp).

When I went to school it was the custom for every child to send a card to every kid in the class. So we always had tons of cards as a family. It doesn't seem to be a thing with DD's school.

LoveThisDog · 22/11/2023 00:29

I love them! I love to write them, I always make an effort to write a message personal to the person I'm sending to. I love to receive them and know someone has thought of me. I love to have them out on display showing the different pictures.
I have quite a lonely life and Christmas is one time when someone can let me know they are thinking of me with a card.

Neverendingstory2 · 22/11/2023 00:30

I hate them. Lately I don’t w an open them when I receive them. I especially hate the ones with pics of the family, I have no idea what to do with them. My sister sends one every year of her and her family and I always wonder why. I usually just chuck it in the trash or throw it in the pile of mail with the other cards

Ishouldgodostuff · 22/11/2023 01:44

I don't send them out anymore, postage costs are the main reason. But also most of our families are nearby so we will see them or phone them on Christmas Day, negating the need to send a postal wish.
But I have just received the most ugly hand made card from a woman I used to be friends with 25 years ago. No handmade delight being created here for a return card 😂
It's def a "no cards at Christmas" for me

Topseyt123 · 22/11/2023 02:33

I always hated writing them, and for some reason it always seemed to be wifework in this house, even though DH faithfully promised that he would help. He never got round to that, and so I just stopped sending any, which felt so liberating.

These days the only cards I send are to my elderly mother and to my sister, neither of whom we will usually see on Christmas Day.

gnarlynarwhal · 22/11/2023 02:44

I really miss them. I used to send them to family and friends but none of us bother any more it’s really sad.

Ponderingwindow · 22/11/2023 03:15

I love holiday cards.
i am mildly obsessed with stationary and it’s one of the last ways we actually correspond by mail. If at all possible I craft homemade cards for every recipient.

I love getting cards in the mail. I like noticing which stamp someone has chosen and what color ink they used. Each choice can have meaning Or it can be a what was most expedient, but I still enjoy the experience.

Oblomov23 · 22/11/2023 05:14

I like them. Put up a row of silver beads and hand them on the wall.

MyopicBunny · 22/11/2023 05:29

I had a relative who used to send at least 150 cards every year!

terraced · 22/11/2023 05:42

I don't send any and if I receive them I just put them in the recycle bin.

Hobbesmanc · 22/11/2023 05:56

I wasn't working last year and I was surprised how fewer cards I received. I do like the ritual of choosing them and writing them out and they help make the house look festive.

I remember cutting up the nice ones to make gift tags last year but I've no idea where I put them lol.
