What are you favourite high quality but practical things?

My husband doesn’t need or want anything, but he loves and gets great joy out of using well thought out high quality items.

We have 10 year old kitchen scissors and he still mentions how much he like them every time he uses them.

A few years ago I got him a really good set of screwdrivers. He loves them too.

Also a really good long ruler. A comfy pen that writes well. A hose trigger that fits comfortably. Just random stuff really.

Anything well designed for its purpose if you see what I mean.

so what are your favourite well designed practical items, that you love using?

Thank you so much @Talipesmum - just ordered it for DH 😊

I see your le creuset teapot @Madcats and offer the Falcon enamel teapot (for those of us with a tendency to drop ceramics). Mine is 12 years old now. No drips. And astonishingly, for me, no dents either. I must have replaced my teapot at least five times in as many years before this one.

Speaking of dropping ceramics, I have been using a really cute set of nigella measuring cups for around 18years. A lovely and practical Christmas gift many years ago. Yesterday I dropped and smashed the 1/3 cup.
So any suggestions for a lovely new set of measuring cups? My only requirement is that they are accurate. Lots of the cutesy ones are not

These probably don't qualify as cute though. 🤔

My measuring cups are from Mason Cash. Not sure if there’s a third cup size, though. I use them as little as possible. Weight over volume every time!

Will have a look thanks. I prefer weight, but after living in North America for some time I have quite a lot of recipe books using cups.

Love these coffee cups. Available in different sizes, the handles are just perfect.

This threads old, but we absolutely LOVE our small cuisinart. It’s a work horse as we love making sauces for 1-3 meals.

This OXO good grips pair of kitchen tongs. It locks into a closed position for storage, and works exactly as I want it to. I use it for turning items in a frying pan, lifting spaghetti etc.

We have these are they are ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. The amount of times I’ve pinned my flesh is ridiculous. Cheap crap.

EversoDisorganised · 25/02/2024 08:14

Oh, we've had them for years, use them all the time and have never had any sort of pinch injury, how strange.

anyolddinosaur · 25/02/2024 09:11

Saw a link to this from another thread and a couple of people mentioned garden tools - so we've had this long handled hedge trimmer for a few years now and it reduces hedge trimming time by about half compared to cheaper tools that break in a couple of years. Wish we'd bought it years earlier. https://www.gardenmachinerydirect.co.uk/shop/stihl-hla-56-cordless-long-reach-hedge-trimmer-set/?_gl=11wifwl3_upMQ.._gaNTE1NTU3ODgyLjE3MDg4NTIwNjU._ga_EXB07R1XVP*MTcwODg1MjA2NS4xLjEuMTcwODg1MjA4MC4wLjAuMA..&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIzIr585HGhAMVLppQBh3KngcrEAAYASAAEgJTjPD_BwE

a metal ruler that has a zero right at the edge.

Simple small wooden thongs. I use them for all sorts of things, like fishing stuff out of a saucepan, flipping pieces in a frying pan.

Could you make yourself a little chart of how much a cup, half/quater/third is and use that to weigh the stuff? You'll soon remember it anyway, if you use the cup recipes ofter enough.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 25/02/2024 10:04

Do you mean tongs? I have an image of you using flip flops!

Sorry, I am sleepy, only just realised that this doesnt work.
