Present from baby

It’s my DS’s first Christmas and I’m struggling to think of a gift from him to his Dad.

Does anyone have any ideas? Do you normally give your partner gifts from your young DC?

I've never been a fan of presents "from" children until they are old enough to know it's from them and can choose the gift themselves (even if it's a rubbish choice). It seems pointless to me!

But some people do it, so, something personalised with your baby's handprints or footprints and "first christmas" on?

Mummy08m · 20/10/2023 23:32

He'll know it was you who chose it, not the baby.

The only time I did this when dd was a baby is Father's Day and then it's just a card, and I let her reach her hand out and grab one off a shelf.

You could do that with a Merry Christmas Dad card.

A whole present...is just a second present from you, surely

Newmum331 · 21/10/2023 03:18

Thanks both, I agree it’s really a second present from me but know he’ll be upset if he doesn’t get something.

As its his first Christmas as a Dad I was thinking a personalised gift along the lines of a photo mug or handprint etc but hes already bought himself a mug, had handprints done and doesn’t have a tree for a bauble. I know how much he’ll appreciate a gift but just need to find the right one.

I never bothered with that. Certainly not as a baby of only a few months old!!

The kids didn't get us presents until they were old enough to understand and to have at least their own pocket money. Neither of us ever expected it and nor did he grandparents.

In my opinion gifts from babies is taking things a big step too far.

I bought a leather bound keyring with photo inside from not on the highstreet one year for my partner. We share cars and actually I quite enjoy looking at the baby picture now he's older. www.notonthehighstreet.com/creategiftlove/product/personalised-metal-photo-keyring-with-leather-case?cq_src=google_ads&cq_cmp=20599747405&cq_term=&cq_plac=&cq_net=x&cq_plt=gp&DGMKT=FID__TID__PID_663976_CRI_&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI-qDNtqWGggMVFMftCh08FQbKEAQYASABEgLuoPD_BwE

Bottle of vodka.

We've done gifts "for" parents that are really for DS - eg a "daddy is awesome" book for DH to read to DS, a colouring book that's "mummy and me".

We've also done the DS being presented two options in the shop and picking the one he went for - works with food/drink choices quite well.

You could get something a bit wacky but fun like photo printed socks? Are there any items your DC gravitates towards that you could play on, for us it was rubber ducks and we got DH one from DS?

We didn't have a tree the first year after my son was born, but my husband still got me a bauble with a photo of the 3 of us in it from 'the baby' as a Christmas present. We pinned it to the wall!
We have a tree every year now my son is older.

morag1234 · 21/10/2023 08:15

I would get one of those personalised mugs with lots of pictures of them both on it.

Shlump · 21/10/2023 08:17

Photo for his desk? Something he likes for the baby - a football onesie or whatever?

I wouldn’t make it a big deal, you’ll set a precident for having to buy each other tat from the kids every birthday and Christmas whether you want it or not.

I always used to get a gift for my DH from our DC when they were tiny! Sometimes it was just a box of chocs. Other things were a framed photo of them together, a word art mug, a 'This Daddy belongs to...' keyring, a football shirt of his team with 'DADDY' and '1' on the back, a Daddy Pig tshirt!

Some were pretty silly tbh but DH always liked it! Now they're older they choose their own things for him.

showmethegin · 21/10/2023 09:19

I got DP a printed photo book for Father's Day full of photos of the two of them together. He absolutely loved it!

ChristmasIsComing2023 · 21/10/2023 20:02

We didn’t do presents from ds for his first or second Christmas but I do make keepsake things with him for us and grandparents to keep. I did a hand and footprint bauble for his first Christmas and robin handprint canvasses for his second. I might do snowman feet with him this year as it’s quick and easy 🤷‍♀️😂 Then next year if he seems like he understands I’m planning to take him to Poundland and let him pick a gift for everyone which will probably end up being completely random items but they’ll actually be from him then 😅

For Father’s Day I have done a Photobook of pictures of him and his dad with his hand and footprints on the inside of the covers and some other handmade craft activities/paintings from him though 🤗

LittleMousewithcloggson · 21/10/2023 20:28

The best thing for him will be a Christmas card saying “daddy” on it - as that’s something no one else can give him.
Sign it with a baby footprint or handprint.
If he reads, a photo bookmark with a picture of the 2 of them is nice
Or a desk calendar
There are also some nice books on Amazon “I love my daddy” and similar - that he can read to your baby when he’s older

I have a two year old and I just get something little from her and we now make cards together.
