Favourite gateaux/dessert for Xmas buffet

Every year since time began I have made delia Smiths chocolate truffle torte at Xmas. It's very nice but I'm absolutely sick of it. There's almost a riot by my family if I say I'm not making it this year, so I'm going to make it along with something else.

Does anyone have any fantastic/easy/delicious recipes that aren't chocolate?

What about trifle? Everyone loves trifle!

Thank you for sharing. I lost this recipe years ago and am very excited to make it again!

We do a wintery pavlova with figs, pistachios, physalis, pomegranate seeds, dark coloured berries etc. Drizzled with warm spiced honey.

Hope it's as good as you remember!

I do pavlova but shape it into a wreath. I just draw the outline on the baking paper (turn the paper over, you can still see through) and dollop on the pan mix to follow the shape. Then decorate with Christmas coloured fruit - berries and kiwi fruit.

In addition to some suggestion I made in the above link, this hazelnut meringue is delicious. I usually do 3, thinner layers though, but depends if you have enough pans the same size.

Much better with raspberries instead of strawberries, IMO!

Biscoff cheesecake. Easiest thing in the world and goes down a storm

Warm mince pies with baileys cream or bannoffee pie

feliciabirthgiver · 20/10/2023 22:56

Thank you @FunCatSunPat that sounds epic, how do you make the honey?

EdgeK · 20/10/2023 22:59

I find a nice Panna Cotta very palatable (and popular) after a big day of food.

BinkyBeaufort · 20/10/2023 23:07

Pavlova.
Everyone thinks it's scary, but actually it's dead easy. You can flavour the meringue (I've done chocolate, coffee, amaretto), and then whatever fruit and flavoured cream you like, eg cherries, cherry brandy, tropical fruit with coconut, chocolate and ginger, the possibilities are endless.

Therealjudgejudy · 20/10/2023 23:11

Strawberry gateau for sure...

Itwasamemo1 · 20/10/2023 23:16

M&S raspberry roulade and lemon tart from our local bakery. Do not have the time or expertise to make my own desert !!

picturethispatsy · 20/10/2023 23:33

A proper trifle 😋

YuliaJollyberry · 21/10/2023 01:49

Sherry trifle, pavlova and black forest gateaux are my favourites.

4catsaremylife · 21/10/2023 02:09

Key lime ice-cream cake tasted divine but getting the homemade ice-cream to set nearly ended me. Another fan of a baked cheesecake, or Panna cotta with raspberry prosecco jelly ready easy to make even with fresh raspberries - my late mum's favourite, I can't bear to make it since she died

tintinandhisdogsnowy · 21/10/2023 11:02

I'm spoilt for choice now, they all sound divine. Thanks everyone

Thanks everyone. Some good ideas. Hadn't thought of meringue, although I'm tempted by Vienetta!
This isn't for Xmas lunch, it's for a buffet tea.

How about meringue with chestnut purée, whipped cream and grated chocolate for a Mont Blanc vibe?

YoungOnTheInside · 21/10/2023 11:40

We have a home made lemon meringue every year as it is elderly MIL’s favourite.

Other favourites include home made brownies (you can cut these small for those who are full already), & key lime pie.

Isthiscorrect · 21/10/2023 11:40

I've just saved a recipe for Negroni pavlovas with spiked gin sauce as we are all grownups for Christmas dinner.

Previously it's been orange and chestnut roulade. Or celebration ice cream (port, cherries, nuts and some fruit). Trifle with no sponge (husband doesn't like it 🙄). Meringue in very thin layers with fruit, cream and chocolate.

Pascha · 21/10/2023 11:46

Black forest every time.

Now i'll go back and read the thread.

XelaM · 21/10/2023 14:31

Has to be Black Forest Gateaux. Nothing else comes close!

tintinandhisdogsnowy · 21/10/2023 17:05

I do love Black Forest gateau. However, that strawberry trifle looks bloody awesome.
