I want to start picking up a set of animals for my currently 18 month old, which i can build on each year.

Do I go with wooden Lanka Kade or plastic Schliech ?

Which ones last the length of childhood?

Schleich are excellent

definitely schleich. still popular with my 10 year old. lanka kade not much past 3 or 4 years old.

Schleich - my 11 year old DD still asks for it for her birthday/Christmas and plays with it often. We have kept all the boxes as she wants to keep them for her children when she is older (as I did my sulvanian families). They are pretty indestructible and good value. I think I’ve probably invested about £2k to the company over the years!

Scheich are fab, nicely detailed.
My animal loving DD got a lot of play value from them.

yes safe. they are very solid. they might have sharp edges compared to lanka kade etc legs on a cow but ive never thought they were dangerous for toddlers

My now 8 year old got his first Schleich dinosaur at 10 months. He picked it off the display stand himself (T-rex) and it still gets played with today. Dd started collecting the Schleich bayela unicorn foals after she was bought a couple for her 2nd birthday. Between them we have a massive collection of dinosaurs and horses. They are durable, hold value and there are so many options. We love Papo here too.

Our Lanka Kade does still get played with but it's more elements which are hard to find else where such as trees, witch's cauldron, mushrooms than actual animals. We have a Halloween set and a Christmas one which gets loads of love but the rest are semi ignored.
