Who’s having an “unusual” Christmas meal?

I’ll start!

we are visiting my family in India after many years - and have just finished christmas dinner. White British spouse who’s led a life of roast turkeys set the menu requests for today and we’ve had, amidst balmy 25 degrees “winter” weather - a spread of -

Chicken reshmi kebab
Paneer tikka kebab
Naans cooked on proper charcoal
Afghani Biriyani
Mutton Rezala
2 chopped salads
Raita

kids are now playing with Indian grandparents in hot sunshine on a balcony.

Extremely English white spouse of mine is sleeping in a meat sweat faintly smelling of curry 😂

he’s requested never to have a turkey xmas ever again!

Going out for a meal, I haven't picked what I want yet
Feel free to throw recommendations at me - it's an Indian restaurant and I don't mind heat, and trying new things!

Indian food sounds fabulous

Not wildly unusual, but there's only 2 of us and we're not fans of roast turkey, so we're doing a roast chicken dinner. Was talking to someone yesterday who was planning to do homemade lasagne for Christmas dinner, and thought that sounded epic

FartyBrainedHippo · 25/12/2022 12:45

These alternative meals sound really tasty! We had pie, roast potatoes, sprouts etc last night, and are going for a fancy Indian meal tomorrow. Today we're having prawn cocktail followed by cheese fondue with pigs in blankets, but not until we fancy it, which may not be for some time, as we've had about four pastries each already.

Tuna and cheese jackets here as it’s just two of us, will probably cook mid afternoon.

Oh if you were here with us now my family would smother you in freshly made kebabs and naans and pilafs!! Hope you manage an Indian feast wherever you are!

Sounds divine! I'll do my best thanks (although it is unlikely to be as tasty!)

'Tuna and cheese jackets here as it’s just two of us'

Sounds yum to me 👍

Pickle1512 · 25/12/2022 14:55

I’m on my own for Xmas dinner (had kids earlier) and just ate a whole baked Camembert to myself. smothered it in honey and walnuts as well, just to add to the calories.

Rowgtfc72 · 25/12/2022 15:27

Pizza here- like most years. Usually only get Christmas day off work so it's a waste of a day spending my time cooking.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 25/12/2022 15:30

Bacon butty on cheap white bread and a caramel doughnut washed down with a strong cuppa. Fire lit, and cat to cuddle on lap. Bliss.

TwoMonthsOff · 25/12/2022 15:31

Goat cheese omlette, chips, salad and crusty roll with isigny butter was lovely my favourite treat meal

TwoMonthsOff · 25/12/2022 15:33

@Pickle1512
ive got some baking cheeses that have gone over the date, so I definitely have to eat one later (I’m going to copy your walnut and honey idea if that’s okay ) 🍷cheers

I found DH on the sofa this morning clutching the sick bowl.
So we'll try again tomorrow.
Today has been snacks if we fancy anything at all.

AndStand · 25/12/2022 15:40

So I've just had a bag of cheese puffs and a Bailey's.

Catterbat · 25/12/2022 15:46

Indian here too! As for the past 20 years or so so it’s our tradition now. Had it delivered, enough for about 5 people and there’s only two of us but it’s Christmas. And we have LOADS of leftovers 😋

I had a bowl of red pepper soup, a mouthful of turkey breast ditto cranberry sauce and two pieces of broccoli. I'm upstairs trying to find my itchy eye cream and listening to the chest doing creaky door impressions.

Everyone else is tucking in to their giant pigs in blankets and Yorkshire pudding.

Pelo22 · 25/12/2022 17:34

Can’t move!

We've had sort of an Afternoon Tea:

Smoked Salmon, Roast Beef and Horseradish and Cucumber sandwiches.

Mini goats cheese and red onion Tartlets
Fancy Butchers Sausage Rolls

Scones with Homemade Jam and clotted cream
Christmas Cupcakes.

It's been lovely, we've slowly worked our way through it all afternoon, its been very low in effort and I'd definitely do it again.

(we generally don't do a Christmas Dinner on Christmas Day but at some other point during the holidays)

pinkksugarmouse · 25/12/2022 17:51

Vegan version of Christmas Dinner and we don’t like Christmas pudding so we will be having some (vegan) chocolate torte and ice cream later.

amylou8 · 25/12/2022 17:51

DP is on call involving lots of driving, so I'm keeping him company. Christmas dinner was a cranberry and brie sandwich and a bottle of pepsi max from the M4 services 😁

BCBird · 25/12/2022 17:55

Home alone. Had 13 pigs in blankets and ketchup🤭

PayPennies · 25/12/2022 18:16

I now have SO many ideas for Christmas for future years! We are snacking tonight on leftover kebab and raita - I’m amazed that my spouse still has any further capacities to eat more kebab today!

My DMum can't get her head around the fact that we don't have Christmas Dinner on Christmas Day, it really baffles her. But DH and I have just agreed that this hasbeen the best Christmas ever - so relaxed, we've played with DD and her presents all day and we've loved it.

Be a Christmas Dinner Rebel. You'll never look back 🙂

dragonbreaths · 25/12/2022 19:01

I grew up with Australian xmas lunches and I adore proper xmas dinner. I make bread sauce and all.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 25/12/2022 19:09

We had an Indian Christmas lunch too - a version of the traditional lunch given a twist by food blogger Seema Pankhani.
Tandoori turkey with masala gravy
Turka roast potatoes
Mango chutney roast parsnips and carrots
chilli and herb stuffing
Brussel sprout bhajis
Turmeric bread sauce
Cranberry chutney
