Turkey with bacon

Oxo01 · 24/12/2022 09:39

Butcher delivered our meat last night. We bought a Turkey crown instead of a whole one.

I asked for it not to be stuffed or anything but its been wrapped with bacon.
Decided that we would keep bacon on it no problem.

How ever we have a member family visiting tomorrow that does not eat any pork food not for religious reasons though just doesn't eat it.

Should I tell them , (he wont stave as we have lamb and beef also but he does like turkey).
Or just slice enough for 1 person off the crown, take bacon off that part. wipe it and cook separately ?
Would it still have any taste of bacon ?
Thanks and merry Xmas

I dont eat Turkey so wouldn't know about taste - I assumed it was used to keep the meat moist rather than for taste...

Oxo01 · 24/12/2022 09:53

Thanks tweedledee12
im not sure either, i know it keeps moist but unsure how about baconey it tastes after cooking as well. 🤔 so thought I would try it this year.
Was thinking surely if I cut a bit off with no bacon on it that wouldn't have any taste.
its just not telling him I may feel a but guilty Lol

I think all you can do is ask him whether it would bother him if his bit of turkey had touched some bacon. If he is very strict about it he would want to know, if he doesn't care he will appreciate you thinking of his wishes.

Oxo01 · 24/12/2022 10:17

Thanks @BlackForestCake
Yes I think that's what I will do.

Just now need to know how bacon affects taste of turkey as I've never tried it before myself.

Bacon doesn’t particularly affect the taste in my experience. Infact always seems to fall off during cooking when I use it. It mainly helps keep it moist ( and tastes good when all crunchy if you like bacon)

I would just tell him - defo wouldn’t try and cut a slice off raw and cook it

Oxo01 · 24/12/2022 10:58

Thanks @littlestowl
That's great Re: Taste.
I will tell him, as it would play on my mind if I didn't, he wont starve anyway.
Merry Xmas to all.

I’ve never been able to taste it at all.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/12/2022 11:30

It goes crispy if put on top of the turkey, and the fat goes to add to the juices in the roasting tin, for proper gravy.

I doubt he’d taste it, but having said that, I’d be a bit peeved if I couldn’t add the usual streaky bacon, but would probably just grump to myself and baste the bird with butter, instead.

Mrsjayy · 24/12/2022 11:34

You can't taste it just carve them turkey without skin . You are overthinking and panicking give yourself a talking too 😃

MajorCarolDanvers · 24/12/2022 11:34

You can't serve them turkey that has been cooked in bacon.

Complete betrayal of rust.

You need to remove it before it's been cooked. That's still dodgy but 1,000 times better than leaving it on.

MajorCarolDanvers · 24/12/2022 11:35

Or tell him so he can avoid it.

Oxo01 · 24/12/2022 13:06

Update
I told him, as i couldn't lie
Guess what , he doesn't eat turkey now !
So all good I told truth and i can try bacon on turkey with peace of mind. Merry Xmas

But strong. 😂

Oh lord, he's not going to turn up and announce he's vegetarian and get out out that the roasts were done in the same pan as the meat etc??

Whiskeypowers · 24/12/2022 13:19

What does he eat then?
and given it’s the default protein of choice on Xmas day when was he going to tell you this???!!!

mondaytosunday · 24/12/2022 13:31

Gosh when was he going to tell you that? How did he know you'd have other meat on offer? Or is he off that too? Really!

Oxo01 · 24/12/2022 16:00

He knew there would be lamb and beef as well as turkey as I do all every year.
I just didn't know he doesn't eat turkey now.
All sorted no more drama with turkey or bacon now 👍
