My teenage DS has just announced that he doesn't want turkey on Christmas Day. We keep chickens and he stopped eating chicken a few years ago but it seems now to have extended to all avian life. He still eats other meat, which doesn't really make sense to me, but does give me more options. He will also eat stuff like quorn, tofu and some beans and pulses, but we are a nut free home so nut roasts etc are out.
Can anyone suggest an alternative main for one that's fairly easy - ideally something that I can just shove in the oven alongside everything else?
I don't mind doing something different, just wish he'd given me a bit more notice! I'm not a turkey fan myself really and I would have just done something different for us all if I'd known, but turkey is ordered and can't be cancelled.

Sorry but I wouldn't be doing something different with 3 days notice. I've already done my big food shop so I'd be unimpressed that he wanted me to go back to the shops. I'd be saying "sorry, 3 days notice is too little, get yourself something or just eat all the sides" there's plenty in sides on Christmas day that you don't really need the turkey. Pigs in blankets, stuffing, different types of potatoes, veg etc. He won't exactly be hungry.

pigs in blankets with full size sausages rather than chipolatas

Notonyournellykelly · 22/12/2022 11:14

I'd also give him extra pigs in blankets instead of turkey. Or gammon if you are cooking some

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 22/12/2022 11:16

With such very short notice I would just be saying eat everything else and ignore the turkey...

Margo34 · 22/12/2022 11:16

Meatloaf for something totally separate?

Or, like other pp have suggested, just give him more gammon or pigs in blanket (especially if you're already doing those).

A gammon ? You can use the leftovers over the following 2 days for sandwiches, gammon and chips or on homemade pizza.

yoshiblue · 22/12/2022 11:25

I'd either take him with you to M&S or your nearest supermarket to choose a shove in alternative or he can just have everything except the turkey

I like a quorn roast- it's tasty and cheap, and can just be put in the oven alongside everything else.

AdaColeman · 22/12/2022 11:48

Sausage roll not those dinky cocktail ones, pop in the oven to warm up for a few minutes as you're dishing up. Would go well with the gravy, roast potatoes etc, and is cheap and easy to cook.

MatronicO6 · 22/12/2022 11:55

Get a small gammon

WindUpPenguin · 22/12/2022 12:43

Another gammon/ham vote. You can boil it on the stove top and then just pop it in the oven with a glaze (I do pure marmalade) when the turkey comes out to rest. We always do one alongside the bird (usually goose). Leftovers are great and can also be frozen.

Sprig1 · 22/12/2022 12:49

Gammon, it is a easy and you can slice up leftovers for sandwiches/to freeze. We have ditched turkey altogether and just have gammon these days.
