Taking the tree and decorations down on Boxing Day

I mean, what? It is still the Christmas / festive period right up to New Year's Day.

I don't understand why decorations are put up as early as the day after Halloween (which I have seen people squealing about this year like no other) and then taken down whilst it is actually still Christmas.

Mine aren't going up until Wednesday this week at the earliest and will come down 6 January as I'm away for a few days after New Year.

DD birthday end of December so we change it so that her birthday feels special and not just all about Christmas. Hope that's ok with everyone

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 19/12/2022 16:25

I always go into the new year with it down, I like a fresh start to the year - there has been times it's come down on Boxing Day because of other plans I have but it's usually a little bit later than that.

MamaFirst · 19/12/2022 16:25

I adore the week between Christmas and New Year! I also don't understand the mentality of it all being over on Boxing Day. It seems such a waste to me, like short changing yourself.

Edwardwilliamnancy · 19/12/2022 16:26

I have an asd teen and they will be down boxing day as to them Christmas is over. They can't cope with them up any longer.

jtaeapa · 19/12/2022 16:26

Just do what you want and let everyone else get on with it. I can’t stand it and would take it all down on the evening of the 25th if I could.

LlynTegid · 19/12/2022 16:28

Their choice but I don't agree with them, and mine come down on 12th night.

Cornelious · 19/12/2022 16:28

Mine have been up since the start of December but will be going down on 29th dec as we're going on holiday for New Years and don't want to come back on 6th January to Xmas decs. I want a clean house.

daffodilandtulip · 19/12/2022 16:30

I go back to work the Monday after New Year, so always want it down by then, but I still feel quite sad doing it on 1st/2nd/3rd. It's definitely still Christmas the week between!

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 19/12/2022 16:32

People are different and can do what they like but I don’t, mine are up first weekend of December and down just before the kids go back to school. My parents were always so late putting the tree up usually a few days before and I hated it. I’m still drinking left over Asti and stuffing my face in my jammies on Boxing Day 😂

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 19/12/2022 16:33

Ours go up on the first sunday in Dec and get taken down new years eve

MysteryBelle · 19/12/2022 16:35

We like to keep ours up until Epiphany. I think many people like to take their decorations down earlier because they just want to get it done, and get the house in order, they tend to be more organized and like to get things put away because it is a job that’s looming. I don’t think it’s about anything else. I do get that.

stargirl1701 · 19/12/2022 16:35

Ours goes up on Christmas Eve and down on Twelfth Night. The crib scene stays until Candlemas.

I much prefer celebrating festivals at the correct time.

JubileeTrifle · 19/12/2022 16:35

The couple I know put theirs up at the start of November. House is full of decorations, Christmas bedding, Christmas crockery, Christmas PJS etc… Comes down December 26th.

Like someone else says they complain about how miserable everyone else is for not putting them up as early as them and are so smug like they are doing something so clever.

Mine aren’t even all up yet! I don’t decorate dining room fully until Christmas Eve as it’s a bit of a mess. I will take some things down on New Year’s Day as it’s a quiet day, just to break up the pain of dealing with it all.

MysteryBelle · 19/12/2022 16:36

I do like idea of putting up decorations early so we can enjoy the season a bit longer.

SnowlayRoundabout · 19/12/2022 16:36

I agree. There are 12 days of Christmas. Ours went up last weekend and will stay till 12th Night.

Fairislefandango · 19/12/2022 14:13

People can do what they like, and I imagine that if your decorations have been up for weeks and weeks it might be quite a relief to get back to normal. That's one reason why I don't put mine up until about the 16th December.

Same here.
Not saying we leave them until twelfth night but we certainly leave them until into the NY.
Late up, late(ish) down.

doris9034 · 19/12/2022 17:02

Mine were up earlier than usual this year (26th Nov - usually do 1st weekend in Dec) but only because the GC's visited that weekend and we did the Christmas Markets. Will def be taking them down by 2nd Jan as it's my birthday on 4th and I like that to be un-christmassy!!

HellsCominWithMe · 19/12/2022 17:03

I don’t have a tree. I do decorate. Just without a tree.

milveycrohn · 19/12/2022 17:09

Traditionally, decorations and the tree were put up on Christmas Eve and taken down on 12th night (Jan 6th).
In my house decorations go up about 1 week before Christmas due to time pressure, and come down on Jan 1st or 2nd.

Yes!!!! It's the best time of the year AFAIC. You don't know what day it is, just lounging about, relaxing, eating chocolate, seeing friends and family... why artificially cut it short?

Blossomtoes · 19/12/2022 17:35

Ours went up on Friday and will come down on 5 January.

Topseyt123 · 19/12/2022 17:42

Ours go up just a few days before Christmas (sometime this week) and come down either New Year's Eve or New Year's Day.

I find that perfectly sufficient.

KillingLoneliness · 19/12/2022 17:43

Mine have been up since mid November and they’ll be coming come down on the 7th of January.

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 19/12/2022 17:48

Mine aren't up yet, probably will go up on Wednesday or Thursday. I’ll take them down on 1st. I'm fed up of them by 28th but as we are having people over they can stay up til then. 🤷‍♀️

LittleDragonRoo · 19/12/2022 17:51

Mine come down pretty quickly. Not generally Boxing Day as we’re usually visiting family then, but certainly within the few days after. We have a fairly small house and two children so the influx of Christmas toys generally requires a bit of re-jiggling to find them all a home and it’s easier to do that with the tree out of the way. Plus it means that I can give the house a good clean to start the new year fresh, and I don’t have the task of un-decorating once I’m back in work.
