Picked one up yesterday as it was heavily discounted.
Even for chicken I usually avoid breast meat and we usually order a Turkey Thigh Roll Joint from Riverford.
However, at a 75% discount and seeing that the 3.75kg M&S Turkey Crown had been partly cooked with sous vide (still required two and a half hours in the oven at 180C) I gave it a go. The Turkey Thigh Roll hadn’t lasted long and what’s Christmas without lots of leftovers!
If you don’t like the dry texture of Turkey Breast, this could be an ideal choice.
The baking instructions call for aluminium foil (make sure you have some) but are quite straightforward. In return you get a huge slab of moist, easy to carve, very tender, very flavoursome meat.
Be warned that this means that the texture is a little different, a bit like how ham is different to pork.
The pouch of gravy is quite small, but the advice on the packaging is to mix it with the juices from the Turkey. Our large crown yielded about 250ml of liquid.
For a gravy-hungry family you might want to have additional gravy ready.
If you are after an extremely tender Turkey Breast with no hint of dryness, this is excellent. Particularly recommended for people who love using up cooked meat as cold cuts, in salads, curries, white roux stews, sandwiches in the Boxing Day to New Year period.
If I ever had to make Christmas Dinner for 8 or more people I would probably choose this. Better to have meat on the table that is enjoyed rather than endured.
