Roasted pickled onions wtf??

So I made the mistake of asking people (who haven't had Christmas dinner at mine before) what Made A Christmas Dinner for them. I got the usual answers- pigs in blankets, chestnuts with the sprouts, sackloads of roast potatoes etc etc. All fine.

Then one person started waxing lyrical about roasted pickled onions. I asked if they meant roasted pickling onions, but they were adamant that it was the onions from a jar.

I decided that I could probably manage this, but I can't find any details on The Google. Has anyone done this? Is it A Thing?

How do I do it? Just drain the onions and throw them in a roasting tin?

Frankly I think it sounds a bit yeuch but I have the onions so am willing to give it a go.

Any and all advice welcome!

Ooh I do love pickled onions, but roasted is a new one on me.

Sillybillypoopoomummy · 18/12/2022 17:56

never heard it, but now want to try!!

Justaminutetakeanhour · 18/12/2022 17:59

I do like things roasted .... and I do like pickled onions. This could go either way! I am no expert (obviously), but yes I would drain them and stick them in a tin but I owuldn't expect they wouldn't take very long! ... Are they the little silverskin ones or the big chip shop ones?

Change your search to pickled onions roasted and there are loads

AriettyHomily · 18/12/2022 18:02

I think they could be delicious, roast them and then pickle?

WithIcePlease · 18/12/2022 18:05

I had them in restaurants years ago
Gorgeous 😊

Shodan · 18/12/2022 18:07

@Justaminutetakeanhour I chose the big ones on the basis that the silverskin ones are generally quite squishy already and roasting them probably wouldn't improve matters.

I'm going to change my Google search as @Greensleevevssnotnose suggests. I've had a look at the other two recipe suggestions and I don't think they're what the onion devotee has in mind.

That's a new one on , roasted shallots before but never pickled onions . Maybe try it in advance first .

mrsbyers · 18/12/2022 18:11

Yum ! Might do this for Christmas

Shodan · 18/12/2022 18:15

Ah @mrsbyers that's the recipe I just looked at! I think that's probably the closest to what I've been imagining. I shall try that one.

This is the stuff of dreams!!! Adding it to my Xmas dinner 🤩🤩🤩

Shodan · 18/12/2022 18:40

@whataboutya Really?? I don't get the appeal. Don't get me wrong- I lurrrrve a pickled onion- but with a nice strong Cheddar or possibly with fish and chips.

And cold 😂

I think it's likely he's taking the piss

Threadkillacilla · 18/12/2022 19:31

Do an experiment in the air fryer and report back. It sounds like something I should be eating but if so why aren't we already doing it?

brusselspout · 18/12/2022 19:33

Well I've often roasted shallots in oil and balsamic vinegar (salt and pepper and thyme) and it's always been delish, I can imagine this would be similar but even more vinegary, which is a win win Grin

Favouritefruits · 18/12/2022 19:33

Didn’t that Bake of lady do roasted pickled onions, I’m sure I watched this on TV a few months ago. Halved and the put in a pan with butter and it was stressed you must touch them as then they break up, flip them over then put them in the oven.

Shodan · 18/12/2022 21:24

I think I'd definitely better do a test run 😂

Or I could just pass him a small dish of broken, tepid pickled onions...

I’ve never heard of this but it sounds like the stuff of dreams! I’m going to give it a try.

picklemewalnuts · 18/12/2022 21:46

It's definitely an air fryer thing. I've done them with little cheap ones but wasn't impressed. Might try again with full size ones.

They lose the sharp crispness and become a bit sweeter.

Shodan · 18/12/2022 22:00

Ok I have an air fryer. That would be quite useful actually- leaves oven space for more important things like sackloads of spuds 😁

I have roasted normal onions with a roast sometimes but never tried pickled!

redlou123 · 18/12/2022 23:06

Intrigued how these turn out. I love normal onions roasted and love picked onions cold (with cheese etc), but have never thought about having them roasted. Please report back on how you get on!

Shodan · 19/12/2022 09:43

@redlou123 I'll definitely report back. Who knows, it could be the start of something amazing.

(Or, more likely, be a tale of vinegary woe 😂)
