Christmas Eve buffet

CandyFloss35 · 18/12/2022 13:38

After reading a thread yesterday about Christmas Eve nibbles and what people are expecting I’ve started to second guess my food choices. On Christmas Eve there will be 8 people total at mine from 5pm, 5 of those are household members and 3 guests. For easy I decided a selection of help yourself items was the best way to go so I wasn’t tided to the kitchen all afternoon/evening. Please check over my list and tell me if it’s enough, what’s missing etc, thanks.

x2 extra large pizza counter pizzas
x2 quiches
ham joint
chicken drumsticks
chicken nuggets
pork pies
sausage rolls
coleslaw
potato salad
pasta salad
mixed salad
vine cherry tomatoes
veg sticks with dips
grapes
strawberries
french stick and butter
bread sticks
cheese twist crackers
crisps
peanuts

mince pies
cheese cake
chocolate brownie Christmas trees

That's a LOT of food! I wouldn't do a ham joint - and what's with all the salad? The cheesecake is too much, too, and the buttered bread

CandyFloss35 · 18/12/2022 13:45

I’m not buttering the bread I meant there will be butter available for the bread, the ham to slice to go with the bread.
Cheese cake is staying it the only desert one of my dc eats.

Too much!
I don't think you need the pizzas, nuggets, or pork pies. Also I'd have either potato or pasta salad, not both. And no need for breadsticks. Peanuts seem out of place. I'm happy with the dessert selection though 😋!

maddiemookins16mum · 18/12/2022 14:04

6 of us on Christmas Eve for a ‘buffet’.
Crusty french sticks/ nice butter
A few different cheeses
A cooked ham (sliced)
Christmas Coleslaw
Cherry toms and some cucumber/carrot sticks
Hummous
Pork pie
Cold chicken drumsticks
Veggie quiche.

Yule log for afters.

TimmyMeatballs · 18/12/2022 14:14

It’s too much. Get rid of some of the meat, a quiche, a salad, breadsticks and peanuts. Even then you’ll have leftovers.

itsgettingweird · 18/12/2022 14:19

x2 extra large pizza counter pizzas
x2 quiches
ham joint
chicken drumsticks
chicken nuggets
pork pies
sausage rolls
coleslaw
potato salad
pasta salad
mixed salad---- leaves
vine cherry tomatoes
veg sticks
dips
grapes
strawberries
french stick and butter
bread sticks
cheese twist crackers
crisps
peanuts
Various cheeses

I'd cut out some and have stuff to make side salad and add cheeses to have with bread or crackers.

Desserts are fine.

This is what I e always had to xmas Eve buffet and it all goes into boxes and/ or keeps in fridge for a few days if it's not eaten.

itsgettingweird · 18/12/2022 14:21

Ahhhh it crossed through things I wanted to keep.

So mixed salad leaves
Veg sticks
Cherry tomatoes
Grapes and strawberries
Dip

All to stay.

itsgettingweird · 18/12/2022 14:21

And keep the French stick and butter.

THisbackwithavengeance · 18/12/2022 14:26

It's a lot of food but nothing that won't save in the fridge for Xmas day nibbles or Boxing Day.

If that's what you've planned, just stick to it. It sounds lovely.

NoNamesLeft234678 · 18/12/2022 14:40

The people saying it's too much make no sense to me 😅 Growing up it was just me and my parents and we always had a full table of buffet food

Yes indeed, surely a groaning table is part and parcel of Christmas. My DH would want posh pork pies and about a million varieties of cheese added to that lot. I'd have some nice quiches and a homemade sherry trifle.

NoelNoNoel · 18/12/2022 14:46

It’s too much. I’m doing a Christmas Eve buffet for 5 adults and will heat up 6 different M&S buffet items (mini burgers etc), add a salad, coleslaw and tube of Pringles.
I would ditch the pork pies, cheese twist crackers and another couple of bits.

SomethingOriginal2 · 18/12/2022 14:56

I'd just do one quiche, but I don't like quiche 🤣
And I'd add pate for the bread (because I like pate 🤷‍♀️)

I'd also chuck a tub of chocolates on there too.

SnuggleBuggleBoo · 18/12/2022 14:58

I agree it's too much, if you're having a Christmas dinner the next day. No one will have an appetite for it after all that! I'd do away with the pizzas which don't really 'fit' and either the chicken nuggets or drumsticks.

emotionallyfragile · 18/12/2022 15:01

It sounds lovely.
I honestly wouldn't change anything.

pinneddownbytabbies · 18/12/2022 15:14

Forget the pasta salad and a whole ham, just do a few slices of ham on the plate with the pork pie. Forget the strawberries as well, unless you have a dc who won't eat much else. And don't have breadsticks and cheese twists, just one or the other.

What about some cheese?

Redburnett · 18/12/2022 15:16

Looks delicious and far too much for 8 - can I come?

ginslinger · 18/12/2022 15:19

I honestly think that's too much food unless you're not planning a large xmas dinner

Findyourneutralspace · 18/12/2022 15:19

I’d have a cheeseboard and a selection of pickles on there too

I’d do this but also get rid of the veg sticks and dips which add nothing.

also if you keep grapes and strawberries I’d keep only 2 out of 3 desserts

Sparklingbrook · 18/12/2022 15:23

That's what we have on Christmas Day-with more cheese and no pizza. All day running buffet.

I think it's fine if you've room in the fridge to store the leftovers and you'll get through the rest over Christmas.

Bollindger · 18/12/2022 15:23

It all looks great .
It is your party .
Pickles maybe ?
You can always freeze the chicken if you cook it fresh.

Sodullincomparison · 18/12/2022 15:32

It feels a lot for 8 people.

We are having ten people and

Cheese x 4
crackers
crudites
charcuterie
olives
crisps
dips
baguettes
pate
chocolates
macarons
mini mince pies

Only you know how hungry your crowd will be. Mine won’t wolf it down. DH has a friend who will use half the pate on one slice of a baguette so when he comes we have a LOT more.

Sparklingbrook · 18/12/2022 15:36

I'm feeling a bit peckish reading all this. I'm off to hunt out some dips.

Greenpolkadot · 18/12/2022 16:02

Sounds like standard buffet fayre. And an awful lot of food.
What about a slow cooker chilli and jacket potatoes
