I'm looking for some suggestions for a board game suitable to play as a family at Christmas- children age 5 and 8, and 4 adults. Ideas gratefully received!

Not a board game but great for mixed age group is card game called Newmarket, especially when played for money. Save up you 1 & 2p’s and/or 5p’s and give everyone a kitty to start. The kids get to keep their winnings. It’s simple to play and each game lasts only a few minutes and everyone will win something! It’s great for getting children into playing simple card games and can result in great hilarity ( well it does in our house Grin)

Oh we used to play this at my grandparents! That was a long forgotten memory! Thanks for bringing it back

If you have a deck of cards ‘cheat’ is a great game - rules are on Wikipedia - kids love it

Pickle Letter is good if your 5 yo is fine with letter recognition
Dinosaurs Galore
Hickory Dickory Dock: shop.houseofmarbles.com/product/hickory-dickory-dock-game/
Family Edition Trivial Pursuit - but 5 yo may need some help
Disney Colour Brain

Labyrinth and Carcassonne are good games that can easily be played by kids as well. Also Dobble, if you don't mind a card game rather than a board game.

Qwirkle is great fun and can be played at any age.

Dobble (although not a board game)

We particularly like “Articulate”. They do a family edition which is better if there are younger children in the family.

Camel Cup is loads of fun.

Monopoly junior is surprisingly enjoyable as an adult and very manageable for small kids.

We often modified the rules of games for younger players - eg for scrabble they could pick out any letters to make a word, whereas the adults were stuck with a random selection of 7.

Thank you for all the suggestions! They sound great, I will look into them all
