Board game for adults which fits these criteria

I'm after suggestions for a board game for adults please.

Criteria:

Good for two players
Not anything really obvious like monopoly or cluedo
But also not something really obscure for extreme enthusiasts with a million rules
Something that can travel fairly easily so not a massive board or big components - maybe something based around cards, but not cards against humanity
Preferably around a tenner, maybe £15ish max

Any suggestions?

Hive is very compact - it's basically a few tiles in a bag!

Patchwork

Exploding kittens

Seriously, lots of fun. Card game, mix of luck and brains 😀

Exploding kittens or Kingdomino.

Fluxx is a bit geekier but fun.

Port Royal and Jaipur are two of mine and dhs favourites! Bonus is Port Royal can also be played with more than 2 players if you have friends over!

Also, Onitama is a good 2 player game that plays a bit like chess.

Dreikanter · 14/12/2022 23:08

Jaipur.

The Simpsons version of UNO.

GertrudeBell · 14/12/2022 23:09

Oh yes, definitely +1 for Jaipur and Hive.

Oh yes, definitely +1 for Jaipur and Hive.

And Hive is nice and compact for travelling.

Galvantula · 14/12/2022 23:13

Patchwork is fun. :)
Sushi Go card game.
Exploding Kittens
Various Uno variations
Odin's Ravens
Card games by Helvetiq in little boxes, there are lots including Bandido someone mentioned above.
Pass the pigs is quite nice and tiny!

We play:

Dobble
Monopoly Deal
bananagrams
travel rummikub
chess
colour brain
wonder trumps (better version of top trumps)

KnickerlessParsons · 14/12/2022 23:21

Yatzee. You don't even need a board, just 5 dice.

GertrudeBell · 14/12/2022 23:29

Also Deep Sea Adventure in a tiny box is lots of fun.

Justtryingitonce · 14/12/2022 23:33

Boggle? Also like Yahtzee (like pp say)... but great thread for ideas. I'm going to look through and buy something for Christmas!

GertrudeBell · 14/12/2022 23:40

Also if we stretch the format a bit:

That’s Pretty Clever

and

Welcome To…

are* *both fantastic roll ‘n’ writes where the players roll dice / flip cards and then mark up a paper player “board” in pen to generate fun combos and fulfil objectives.

I’ve made that sound very dull but I promise that they’re both excellent for quick, light but thinky fun.

(That’s Pretty Clever is also known as Ganz Schon Clever but it’s language independent so this makes no difference.)

Itshandled · 14/12/2022 23:44

Rummikub

Itsoktogiveup · 14/12/2022 23:58

Carcassone is brilliant and so simple

JassyRadlett · 15/12/2022 00:02

Maponimoes is great - the Europe version is a classic but the U.K. counties one is epic.

If even slightly into Agatha Christie, Cards on the Table surprised me by being huge fun to play and playable while getting steadily more drunk.

Simplelobsterhat · 15/12/2022 00:04

We have Jaipur which fits the bill. Or Hive.

A bit bigger but not huge is forbiddem island, which a fun cooperative game.

usernotfound0000 · 15/12/2022 09:52

Oh yes, that's so clever is great!

MogTheForgetableCat · 15/12/2022 10:18

Brilliant! Thank you for all the suggestions. I've gone for pass the pigs for now but I'm sure will be getting more.
