I'm trying to find out what events Secondary, state or private schools have in school time in the run up to Christmas for their pupils. I've got two DD, one in state and one in private and it seems v different. Im not wanting to bash either just try and get an understanding of what other schools do. Do people think its helps foster school spirit too?

Both
Christmas lunch
Christmas jumper day

State
Panto (done by final year students)
Christmas quiz
Whole school country dancing on last afternoon
Dress down for charity day

State Evening
All year dance
Christmas concert

Private
Cinema and shopping trip
Christmas craft fair (really for parents)

Thanks

State primary (Ireland)

Carol Service
Christmas jumper day

that’s it (we don’t have dinners here so it’s packed lunch)

Wow! Thanks for all the replies. Quite a variation. Somehow I thought they would do more in primary rather than secondary schools, and in private rather than state but that doesn't seem the case.

Sounds like a lot depends on pta or equivalent too.

I teach in a state C of E secondary school and this year we have;

Taken Y7 to the local theatre panto
Family Christmas Dinner - students and staff had it together.
Carol service at the local church (our choir sang/pupils did readings).
Christmas party day tomorrow including celebration assembly/party/quizzes and games in forms.

It's been lovely and the pupils have really enjoyed it.

Really doesn't sound like private does "more" than state at all does it!

State primary:

  • panto trip
  • whole school Christmas party/disco in village hall with a DJ etc
  • Santa dash
  • nativity
  • evening carol concert
  • Christingle
  • Christmas jumper day with Christmas dinner on the same day
  • last day of term (tomorrow) will be a fun day with crafts and baking in the morning and a class party in the afternoon, non uniform tomorrow.

Last year we also had a Christmas fair which hasn't happened this year for some reason. Also a Santa visit into the classrooms one afternoon which didn't happen either.

oh! There was also a decorate a Yule log competition too and the best won a prize but in the end all children who entered got a prize which I thought was lovely!

State secondary. Nothing. There was a Christmas lunch, but DD didn't want to queue up outside for it.

Thet also have annual Musical in December, but thats Yr8+ as the production starts in the summer.
